Since I have an old Pro Logic receiver with no discrete channels to the rear, could I link the the two rear channels to an old 2 channel stereo receiver I have and get rear right and left discrete 5.1 sound ? Or, are you going to tell me (again) to get a modern receiver and come into the 21st century ?
Thanks.

Where would you be getting the rear channel signal from? If it's from the receiver, then it'll still be non-discrete. Unless you have something with a different processor that can do Dolby Digital and other surround modes (e.g. a DVD or blu-ray player with multi-channel analog outputs), then you won't be able to get anything more than Pro-Logic.

Your old Pro Logic receiver cannot decode Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound, much less the more modern surround codecs that come with Blue Ray disc. Being able to hear those properly will be worth the price of a new receiver.

What's wrong with that? They don't have to be expensive to be good.:D

Do whatever you like: but if you want to decode DD, then you will need a DD decoder, and those were not made until around 1990. Without that, and unless you plan on tracking down old quadraphonic sources (and I'm not sure if those are discreet or not), upgrading or adding a decoder and amp are your only options.

Receivers didn't carry it until 1996-1997, I think.
You are right. I am wrong. I recall a "digital receiver" that came out right after I baught my VSX-9600, but it was not actually DD.

My bad, good catch.
