PS3 DAC, is it crap?

I recentLy spent my entire stereo budget on two speakers and a 2ch power amp.

My plan was going to be to use PS3 as a cd player, using the RCA outs since my preamp wont have a optical or HDMI input.

Ive been doing some reading, and it seems the PS3 is a terrible cd player if it does its own "dac decoding"

Is this true?

How bad is it? For example I have a $150 Sony dvd/divx player , I bought a year ago, would I be better of using this for playing cds?

I have only tried it via optical, but I can't imagine it will be any better or worse than your DVD player.

I really dont know, but I heard it is very bad using the RCA outs, (using optical it is much different)...

Since you already have it, the best way to find out is to give it a try :)

I have a problem with CDs out of my PS3.

My MP3s are fine, my DVDs and Blu-Ray are fine, but there's a problem in upper frequencies out of my PS3 when playing CDs. I just don't know why; but the effect is like putting a piece of paper over the tweeter than then vibrates.

It's so strange, but someone I trust at a different forum said something similar: that 2.0 PCM output sounded horrible, IIRC. That's just so strange, if 5.1 PCM can sound great, why would 2.0 suffer? This was over a year ago, maybe even two years, btw.

Via optical, my PS3 sounds pretty good actually. There are a LOT of settings for music playback, and if you set them wrong, you can get mixed results.
