what are the causes for the onkyo 875 to go into protection mode???

Any progress?

What was the verdict when you checked the temp?

If the feet are sinking into the carpet, that would certainly cut off air flow.

Just an idea

Since you say it is only with BD with demanding sound tracks ...

Assume it is a bad solder joint and the subwoofer primarily (maybe other speakers) actually physically vibrates the Onkyo 875 enough the open circuit or worse short the solder joint.

Possibly disconnect only your sub and retry one of the BDs that fails.

If it works, it might be time to send to Onkyo authorized repair unless you are skilled in testing and soldering yourself.

You have checked speaker wires. But a Isiberian said earlier one of the primary causes of "PROTECTs" is speaker wire shorts. However, since you are going through external amps om all but the surroundsl the wires to look at in your case are the interconnects between pre-out and external amps ( except for the surrounds connected to 875) disconnect all interconnects at both 875 and amp end and add them back one at a time. ( at this point I don't think you need to discconect the wires form the amp output and the speakers).

Good Luck!

I personally don't think it is a heat issue.

it appears that the amp is right next to the avr?
so you have a heat source almost touching the side of the avr. in your owners manual, onkyo states

"8. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators,
heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus
(including amplifiers) that produce heat."

seperate the amp and the avr and see what happens

thanks for all suggestions

but on speaking with the onkyo guys ,was told to disconnect everything from thr AVR
only connect the source (bdp) and display (projector)
and hit the max vol , if it trips the problem was in one of the amp section of the avr , if it doesnt then the problem is elsewhere

so i got bak to do as told by the onkyo people

disconnected everything from the amp
kept the source and display switched on
loaded the king kong bd and played the last chapters ( the empire states building scenes) , cranked the vol to max as told , BINGO the AVR tripped within 5 mins , rechecking led to same results
confirming that the problem lies in the AVR

so its time for the avr to head to service centre

cant believe this happened to my new 875 so soon , had lived with the older 787 for 7 yrs without any issues

this really puts a doubt on the newer onkyo products

before i cud take the 875 to service ,the onkyo service staff landed up @ my place

they were puzzled with the results too:confused:

--the amp switches off only on DTS HD MA soundtrack @ loud vol levels of -3db (chkd with same king kong BD )
--not even a hint of going to protect mode @ +4 db with Dolby true HD (transfomers BD used here)

the service guys await for a reply from thier senior engineers, and the onkyo staff tell me that its the first such troubleshoot they have encountered

i guess its the DTS HD MA bomb
and the avr may require firmware upgrade
will wait for reply from the onkyo staff

any inputs will be helpful:confused:

thanks,
followed what u told me to do, no luck man

with all disconnected from AVr , & only with BDP and source connected , the avr still goes to protectmode with DTS HD MA

whereas with other soundtracks like Dolby true HD there is no issuues

Time to call Onkyo? Tell them that it does it with no speakers connected and only with that DTS MA
