He said he listens to prog rock.I would NOT get Magnaplaners for listening to 2 channel music especially prog.I would however suggest that you buy from www.audiogon.com as there are some amazing deals on used speakers there. If you are looking to buy new there are a boatload of speakers in your price range. The best thing you can do is figure out what you need AVR wise or pre and amp scenario, then look at speakers and subwoofers.Buying used will open up your possibilitys greatly IMO.
Seems like audiogon usually only ships to USA, Im in Canada...

Generally I don't think Klipsch fits what you're looking for, but I found the WF-35 to be a nicer sounding speaker than some of their others.

I also really like, and am considering buying for myself, the B&W CM 7, which is about at the limit of your price point.

You mentioned also the RTi A9 somewhere else. I like that speaker. I am not sure of the added benefit of that speaker over the A7, but if that is a sound you like, I think you would do well with that speaker too.

The A9 is about the same price as the Salk SongTower, which is excellent, but you may not be able to listen to.

Salk

Yes, I like what I have read about Salk, but not being able to listen is a major concern...

The thing with JBL speakers is they will have excellent drivers in them. So if you are into modding you can probably make them hi-fi speakers.

Still at that budget you can almost swing the 705 series from B&W. I'd go with those first.

Yes, Im not scared of modding. But I dont have a place here in Edmonton to listen to the JBL L890s, and Im concerned about some reports of a high end "harshness"; I want warm speakers with no high end harshness...

Ive decided not to buy without listening. There is a crazy deal on the Polk A7 right now and I thought they sounded good, still going to audition more...

Go to the site below and put in your postal code. It will tell you what your nearest PSB delaer is. If you want detailed warm sound, PSB is a must audition.

The best way to find some Salk speakers near you (if there are any) is to look on the Salk Signature Sound forum on AudioCircles. Look for the thread titled Owner's Audition List. It's a long thread, but you may find someone. You should also post and ask if there are any SongTower owners near Edmonton.

If you email Jim Salk, he can tell you if he has shipped any SongTowers to buyers near you. He routinely answers those types of questions.

I noticed a trend here in this forum where mbison has opened the same topic on three threads. Is it a troll or just carelessness on the part of mbison?

Audiogon doesn't ship anywhere. It is essentially a specialized "Ebay" without so much auctioning. You can search by location and find several sellers in Canada, though it is, undoubtedly, a US dominated site.

I know I like "warm" sounding speakers, without harsh treble. Any ideas for brands that I should audition?

Thanks
I would suggest the Salk SongTowers with the dome tweeter.

Axioms are considered by a few to be bright speakers. It all depends on your hearing.

Excuse me lsiberian but when you said that you could mod that line of speakers from JBL and make them HI-FI, what are you referring to? you can change the drivers? the crossover? is that line not HI-FI already?
