Fight fans? Mayweather #1? Fedor?

Any fans of boxing or MMA? Manny Pacquiao just defeated Miguel Cotto to win a title in his 7th weight class... Being the first man ever to do so. Yet, many still put Mayweather ahead for P4P. Some say Floyd is more skilled than Manny's latest opponents. Can't really argue that, Hatton did poorly vs Floyd, so did Oscar, but then again, who did Floyd fight recently? Marquez, who was a much smaller opponent having to go up in weight, Oscar, who's past his prime and lost to Mosley, Trinidad, Hopkins... He also fought Baldomir, Hatton, Judah, Gatti, nothing too amazing there either for Floyd... Manny fought, Marquez at his regular weight, Moralez, Barrera, Hoya going up weight, same Hatton, Oscar, while going up in weight, and won in even more decisive manner.

Anyhow, personally, I have to put Manny at #1, Floyd needs to fight more, only 3 fights last 3 years... Mosley would be intersting, Manny would be the obvious choice, but like Oscar, he doesn't seem to like to take chances, so I'm not holding my breath... But I'd definitely be rooting for Pacquiao, as for who would win, I'd say it really could go either way. It would really be THE match to be had...

Haye beat Valuev, talk of a possible fight vs a Klitshko...

Also, although I'm not much of a MMA fan, caught Fedor's last fight last saturday I think it was, his first show on StrikeForce in America. Had watched quite a few of his fights on you tube and really the guy is impressive, and I understand why he's ranked #1. Anyhow, very exciting fight, fighting a taller, bigger and stronger guy, who stood up against him and even put some pressure, even managing to cut Fedor in the first round... I really wasn't sure Fedor would manage to win, but one right, (lucky?), and it was all over. Nice that Fedor finally made his debut, not many opponents in StrikeForce, but if people demand it, maybe something will happen with UFC.

Well the Pacquiao/Cotto fight kinda made Mayweather look like a punk since he seemed to be dodging a fight against Cotto while at the same time showing just how good Pacquiao is fighting a stronger fighter. It would be a first but Mayweather needs to put his money where is mouth is, I wish someone in Pacquiao's camp would call him out but I don't think it's their style.

I've been watching Fedor for a number of years in Pride and he is the prefect assassin. Completely unassuming body type and small for a heavyweight but he has unbelievable power and speed. There are three guys in the UFC HW division that I think could give him a challenge and that is with Lesnar having the best opportunity due to his speed and size....too bad he is very sick at the moment and looks to be out for a while.

If Frank Mir shows up like he did against Nogueira I think that would be an excellent fight as well. Shane Carwin would be an interesting matchup, I really want to see him and Lesnar fight though, he is a beast at 6'4", 285.

Carwin wears 5x gloves and Lesner wears 4x. I can't imagine the size of those meat hooks.

if mayweather fights pacquiao ... it'll be because of the money, but not because he can win against manny. he knows he will be beat.

his mouth is still very active, but his fists ain't. (heard they never were, only his feet were)

Yeah, I've read Mayweather is going after 70% of the purse now.

personally, i think manny should have one last fight. (if he wants to retire without any brain damage) he can look at his trainer freddy roach as a reminder to quit while ahead.

either
1) one weight heavier to take that 8th belt (heard the champ there is a bit green and ripe for the picking)

or
2) beat mayweather just to shut him up.

:)

first one is for the books, second one would just be oh so satisfying to watch.

Just a side note, what the hell happened to boxing?!?! Boxing used to be BIG TIME. I mean, in Tyson's hey-day, you'd see advertisements all over the place for his next fight. Not really sure why, but I kind of lost interest after Tyson and Hollyfield went away. Boxing just doesn't seem to be the big draw that it used to be. Look how famous guys like Ali, Spinks, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Chavez were at the time? I couldn't name a single boxing champion right now.

I've heard of Manny, (mostly because my wife is Filipino and there's a lot of Filipino pride going around about him right now), but I've never seen him fight.

Anybody remember Meldrick Taylor? He was my favorite boxer, lightning fast with good power. Then Richard Steele screwed him in his fight with Chavez and he was never the same. Screw Richard Steele!

I've heard of Fedor and was looking forward to that Strike Force fight the other day, but my Tivo screwed me. I sat through all of those preliminary fights and my Tivo quit just as Fedor was coming out. I guess the card went long. So I didn't get to see it.

It will be a great fight but Pacman will win. He is to fast and strong

I wouldn't be so sure. Fighting is a very tricky thing. If Mayweather trained really hard he'd be hard to beat.

Fedor is a monster. No one is even in his class, but Lesnar is the best addition to the sport and gives it real legitimacy and a fanbase. As a guy who watched him in the WWE back when it was actually good. I dreamed of him or Angle going to MMA. When Angle broke his neck/back it left only Lesnar. I hope he gets back in there.

I hate to say it but money is what happened to boxing; PPV is what happened to boxing. I love it, but have little interest in it anymore. This junk letting fighters pick who they want to fight has got to stop. Does any other pro sport let you pick who your opponent is going to be?

State of boxing, the heavy weights were usually the big money makers in boxing. If you look at the recent years, there really hasn't been a big heavyweight name, and that's what boxing has relied on...

And the other huge problem, boxers dodging each other. Oscar De La Hoya comes to mind, Hopkins who never went out of his division, Mayweather now who prefers to ride the money train instead of fighting tough opponents, or simply not fight, and the list goes on and on... Take Lennox Lewis, he fought Vitali Klitshko and won because of a cut, but in a really competitive fight, and he wasted no time to retire...

But there was great names in boxing, there still are. Roy Jones Junior was huge, jump to heavyweight unprecedented, De La Hoya, Trinidad, Mosley, Nasseem Hamed (hate to admit it, but he made quite some noise and was entertaining), Gatti, Calzaghe recently. The only thing is that most of these boxers don't want to face each other, they'd rather fight poor opposition rather than take the chance of losing against other superior level boxers... Or they go for money in facing smaller opponents, or opponents pas their primes.

Again, Manny is a breath of fresh air, just look at his list of opponents, in multiple weight classes: Cotto, Hatton, Hoya, Diaz, Marquez, Barrera, Morales, he's given a lot to fight fans...

I really wouldn't be too optimist for MP in a MP vs FM, I'd really say it could go either way, as in 50/50, no matter how good MP can look against other opponents, he could just look bad against FM... MP has lost fights, Moralez, Marquez's draw in which he was knocked down 3 times could have went to Marquez had he not been knocked down 3 times... So yeah he's good, but FM would be the best fighter he's ever faced, and like I mentioned, MP has already lost...

I think it's way, way too early for MP to retire, he's still in his prime, he's not taking heavy punishment in most of his fights, why should he retire? I don't think anyone is talking about his retirement, he's definitely got more than a couple fights left in him.

If Mayweather trained really hard he'd be hard to beat.
Does he not train hard usually? Even if he didn't train hard, I'm sure he'd be very hard to beat anyhow... He's still easily in the top two P4P, whether you rank MP #1 or FM #1, no one really comes close.

the higher he goes in weight classes (like fighting Cotto), the punches get REAL stronger, with all the money he has ... he should just retire. there was this boxer who just had brain surgery ... and Roach, Ali ... parkinson's?

but like all boxers here, they'll burn through the money they have, fight again and be defeated and destroy what they've accomplished.

FM really is a good boxer, but i believe Roach is a better trainer than FM is a boxer :)

MP will have a small chance of knocking FM out, so i guess it will go to the scorecards which FM has an advantage due to his dancing.

Great thread! I got to watch this fight Saturday night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My Philippine friends went crazy!!!!!! :p:eek::p Manny is highly treasured there in the Philippines. Going to the 12th round was incredible. Needless to say, the PPV was worth the money in my book. ;):);)

Cheers,

Phil
