ok so i just picked up my onkyo 807 and soon going to be picking up a ps3 and BD player, i also DO NOT have an hd t.v (im slacking), so right now i run component video to t.v, but question is, can i run HDMI cable for audio from both units to my receiver, and run my video via component, will that work? i know if i ran it straight from the BD player it would, but then what about my ps3? i want to be able to get all the HD audio. thanks

Likely no, though you would need to check the manual for your AVR.
I think the problem will be that the AVR will not like using HDMI for audio and a different video source.
If I make assumptions about your gear from the lack of a HD TV, I suspect that you'll not have an appreciable difference running digital out. I think all you loose are DTS-master and Dolby Lossless. It might affect 7-channel. Are you running 7.x?

No.

You will need to run components from all your outputs to receiver inputs. You might on some receivers be able to mix and match component to HDMI. But might is the key word. If you're getting a PS3 it has a bd player built in.

For a standalone you can get a player with analog outs and do HD-Audio that way.

didnt think so, what if i was to run component from BD player, and buy those 2 into 1 jacks (my mom has a pair, so you can plug 2 sets into one) and run video that way, then send hdmi cables to reciever so the reciever thinks im running both via hdmi?

My suggestion is you run component and digita/optical coaxial. The sound difference between HD audio and normal Dolby/DTS isn't significant enough to jimmy rig your setup. In fact most people couldn't tell the difference in an ABX level matched test.

For cables go to monoprice.com.

First question.

What video inputs does your TV have?

That more than anything else will be the limiting factor on what you can do.

Assuming your receiver is like all the ohers I've seen then the "best" connection you can run from your sources to the receiver is component. HDMI won't be passed to the TV.

That's assuming the receiver will upconvert to component. RTFM or someone else can chime in if they know.

Well, good luck then but don't get your hopes up too high. HDMI is a funny creature.

From my experience with a similar product from Onkyo (PR-SC885) you will not be able to run just an HDMI to the receiver without the receiver HDMI out connected to a functional video device. If I start my system before I get the projector running the audio will play and then cut out every 5-10 seconds while the HDMI keeps trying to handshake with the video output. Go with what others have suggested using component and digital audio which will be the best you can get with your setup.

Mea Culpa

Sorry, the only 807 on the Onkyo site was an amplifer.

I looked up your manual (I like to read manuals  )

Here is your manual : http://63.148.251.135/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=SN29400021_TX-NR807_En_webver2.pdf

Look on page 27. Onkyo has excellent conversion; I think what you want to do will work. It will convert component in, to component out and HDMI out.

Again ..sorry for looking at the wrong manual and any confusion or ofuscation I may have caused.

Good luck!

after looking at page 27 in my manual (in front of me) i then turned to page 29, and it shows a picture of Audio connection formats, and it has hdmi coming in, and then going to monitor out, but has a little star and at the bottom the star says, depends on the "audio tv out" setting, and that setting can be turned on or off if i want the audio to go to the t.v (witch i dont) so that means the hdmi audio stops at the av receiver. so, that should mean its do able?

Please read my post above. In my system this does not work.

It's still going to try to send the video to the TV and most likely have a nervous breakdown when it doesn't get the expected handshake.

Plus, how do you expect to get the video to the TV? It ain't going out component.

I think it's really unlikely but possible that the AVR will funnel component in to component out where HDMI and component are set to the same input, and pull the audio from HDMI.

More likely, detecting an HDMI source will make it shut-off the component out and you'll get nothing.

If you don't want to use your AVR as a switch, you could try connecting the comonent straight from the source to the TV, and the HDMI from the source to the AVR, then *if* the source will put out on both, and *if* the AVR doesn't get pissed it cannot find a TV on the output, you'll have what you are after.

If it were me, and I do have rigs in that boat, I'd just use a fiber for audio until I upgraded the whole system to HDMI... which I can't say I'd be in a hurry for.

well thats what i was going to do, go straight from the source to the t.v, then send a hdmi to the AVR, i know if i sent both cables it wouldent work. but again, i guess its a hit and miss if it works, overall, i will eventually have to buy hdmi cables, so i might as well try it, not going to loose anything.
