Not sure why I didn't know this was coming, but it is already available!! This thing already sounds great, so I am curious to hear the difference.

Improved DAC for both 7.1 and stereo outs. I wonder if this has anything to do with that really expensive version?

Cool. I only use the HDMI connections so they don't recommend I do the upgrade. At 299 with trade are you going to do it?

I didn't even see that. I emailed them and asked about a trade in. Yes, I will most likely do it since I am using it via analog and there would be no shipping since I can drop it off at their office.

They don't offer a trade in; they upgrade your current one and send it back.

Hah I didn't read it well enough to catch that. So the real question is can you live without the "Special Addition" on the front.

I don't even use the analog outs of my BDP-83 but I feel the itch to upgrade myself just because it says "Special Edition" :)

Hey, that is a great reason. The itch has to be satisfied;):D

Maybe you can just get the sticker from the upgrade for a few bucks :p

Nice. I will wait until you've done some testing before I drop mine off, I do believe.

At that price point I would have expected XLR outputs for L/R. But hey, that's just me :p

good point but that would also involve a chassis change to accomodate. They keep the production costs low by sharing two models on the same platform.

Got an email back from them that said 24-48hrs for the upgrade.

I'd do that upgrade in a minute if I could afford it. I assume the upgrade is $400?

No, it is $199, $100 less than if you had purchased the SE, but you have to pay for shipping to them I think. They will ship it back to you at thier cost though.

Just went to Oppo's site, and I see the upgrade is $299 U.S. for those of us who bought the 83 before November 9, 2009. It's tempting, but I don't live in the States, and I'd be nervous about shipping to and from Toronto.

OnlyBestRated.com is a Canadian re-seller. I hope they'll get involved in this exchange/upgrade program.

cheers,

Woops, meant $299, but still $100 off :) The other part of their recommendation was to sell your current one and buy a new one :)

*Edit - there is apparently another upgrade out there that replaces additional components (including power supply) for $796 on top of your player. Called the NuForce Edition:

http://www.nuforce.com/hi/products/oppo_bdp83se/index.php#

http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu...rent-versions-oppo-bdp-83-players-choose.html
They'll do a trade in with the original 83 for $995, so for an additional $496 plus shipping you get at SE/Nuforce. After your email, I contacted Oppo, they tell me there are a couple of beta reviews on the AVS thread (of the SE upgrade). I guess I'll wade through that sometime today. They have no comment on what subjective differences on the players (83 vs SE) and recommend reading some reviews there or here (if Gene gets one), since there's time, before making the decision.

I did a quick search and found one thread discussing it and it was a positive review.

I checked the AVS SE thread, lots of discussion, no reviews yet. Google wasn't my friend either. Where'd you find it?

D'oh, I looked back at it and it looks like his review was of the standard 83, not with the SE upgrade unless he was one of the beta people on this one.

There were 2 threads - one for BDP83 analog and one for Offical BDP83 owners [Tech talk].
