How much does a CD player matter?

I'm doing so research online, I see that some single disc audiophile cd player are up in the $700 + price range.

I currently have a Sony DVD player/CD- Sony DVP-S530D. Its a bit old, but it say it has a DAC Converter of 96kHz 24bit.

Should I invest in a better CD player, or would this be adequate if I use a integrated amp with my stereo setup?

Thanks

"How much does a CD player matter?"

How much does it weigh, or what is the content based on matter?:D

This all largely depends on the CD player.:D;)

Well, it matters if one wants to play a CD:D But then, your Sony will play a CD very well, so you are good to go, no need for $700 players, unless it satisfies an itch:D

Are you using any of the digital outs (optical or coax) on the Sony? Or are you using the analog outs on the player?

If you intend to use the digital outs on the new player, it will not sound any different than the Sony. Analogs on the other hand, for a much better player, might make a difference.

That said, actually perceiving this improvement depends on how well the room's acoustics have been controled. In all but the most well thought out, dedicated listening spaces, the room's effect will drown out any sound improvement from the electronics.
