New way to bust snake oil salesmen and audio myths

If you can't measure it you certainly can't hear it.
Assuming that the recording system can fully capture the effect of the energy waves on a human...correct.

Also, they would need to be methodical about the recordings. If they swap out an amp and adjust something in the environment that will affect the sound at the mic (we all know the effect of the room on sound), then someone could claim that it was caused by the difference in the amps if all they had was the resulting data.

I was just over at Club Polk. Man those guys are on a roll about audible differences in copper VS silver interconnects. I could really make some money off of those guys...:) Some of the things they think can hear are quite astounding.

Seriously, I have no life.
I usually tell the person to prove it. They usually back down or go away. If I actually want to do a listening test, my first question to myself which is often my last, is "does it make enough of a difference to buy something new?". If not, I don't. When I connected my first DVD player and played a CD (sound is more important to me than video), I was incredibly disappointed and thought about returning it. Never thought about how it was connected to the amp, didn't even worry about the "Am I using the best interconnects known to mankind?" or anything like that. I just listened, frowned and tried a different CD. I was able to A/B the CD sound to my music server, which I like the sound of, a lot. I listened all evening and was always disappointed, never giving the cables a thought. It just plain sucked. I needed to turn some of the equipment around to add an ethernet cable to the server, and when I looked, I saw that the DVD player was connected with a cheap set of A/V cables with the molded piece that keeps them from splitting apart. Since the DVD player was connected to the A/V input that had been used for my Beta HiFi VCR and I never played anything of high fidelity on it, I never noticed. I switched to the Stinger cables I had been using with my CD player (now out of the system), it sounded the way it should have all along.

The cables are nothing special, but it sounds really good to me and that's what counts. I have used a lot of Monster products and I don't even buy them at wholesale, even when my rep tells me there's a deal.

I am not sure this is referring to using a mic and speakers but the raw electrical signal itself.

Anyone in Colorado want to play around with this?

I have some stuff I would love to see the results of this with, purely out of curiosity.

This has better potential application than audible difference detections.

I could think of a dozen great ways to use this technology.

audible difference can save you a lot of cost.

Sounds like a plan. I could use some extra cash. Are you good with the soldering iron? I can do the selling. I once sold the best pies in the state.:p

Rule #1 of selling describe the facts about the products that are positive.

This speaker cable has gold coated connectors that are precision engineered and manufactured. The cables are hand assembled in our state of the art facility in North Texas. Made and tested by audiophiles for audiophiles. The cables are composed of the finest copper and coated by a tough rubber jacket that will stand the test of time. Theses cables are so solid they will take your listening experience to new heights.

Testimony: Before I had these cables it was like my speakers didn't exist. With these cables my speakers came alive. Movies felt real. I heard Mozart as I never had before.

Funny thing is all the above are facts. :)

I mean I didn't mention the fact that before I had these cables I didn't have any or that every other cable is like mine. :D

Testimonial:

Why these Croseiberian cables are so rugged, I once towed my boat to Laredo with a set of the L-2 interconnects. Outstanding utilitarian value, and quality! I've been sold!!!

It's not always what's said about a product, it can be more about what is omitted.

I like when audio is described in words relating to food or colors, etc. "They had a buttery sound to them, and were light and airy." Sounds like a good pancake to me. :D

I read about some piece of equipment that was described as sounding 'chocolaty'. Yeah?

Maybe it was made by Linn- they're Swiss, right?

Gene have you ever played with this?

Algebraic subtraction of signals to measure the difference is a common method we used in the lab. It also works for comparing JPEG photo renderings to the raw and TIFF versions. Simply invert the data of one and superimpose on the original. If you get a grey square, they're the same. If you see various patterns, that's the distortion.

In doing a lot of acoustic work on my studio, and making daily measurements, I can tell you that the position of a door will have very obvious effects on the response of the room. Just moving some pieces of insulation around affect the response. Heck, I suspect even the humidity level and temperature affect room response in subtle ways.

If you consider ALL factors, air density has to matter.

There is this place called the deep end.:D

What really matters is that you enjoy your system. Who cares what anyone else thinks. If you want to use magic cables go ahead. Scientifically they aren't necessary, but if they look cool then it's worth it IMO.

Looks do matter. I mean you wouldn't marry an ugly partner would you? :D

It's the pursuit of perfection - eliminating all possible variables to get at the truth!

......but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, at least that's what I've heard...from my old lady. A few times.

Why not just ask them if they also replaced the cheap wires that lead from the speaker connects to the speakers... :D

I don't care about the cable cosmetics- mine are hidden and that's the way I like them.

Wait- if what others thought about peoples' systems wasn't important, why is there ANY kind of thread for showing off systems? :)

Re: "Looks do matter. I mean you wouldn't marry an ugly partner would you?", how many times have we all heard "Why can't men love a woman for her personality?"?

How ugly is ugly? How is she in bed and with the check book? How much $$$$ does she make? Is she amenable to plastic surgery? ;):D
