Assign the audio input in your receiver to HDMI. Make sure your particular Onkyo model, can pass audio via HDMI.

His particular Onkyo is HDMI 1.3 repeater, so it should be able to take HDMI input to the receiver and produce sound. I think you are correct about making sure the audio input is assigned as HDMI.

hdmi problem

Thanks for the reply guys. My hdmi is assigned because I am taking the hdmi cable that goes into my bluray and using that to plug into my laptop. The bluray works fine with audio and video but when i plug it into my laptop i only get video no audio.

Well in tat case your laptop probably does not handle audio over HDMI, or you need to go into your laptop sound card options and see if you can figure it out.

First of all, computers have a mind of their own. That's why I don't think ANY HTPC (laptop or desktop) is for the mass market.

Second, I think it is related to how you are setting up the Audio Device in Windows.

When you hook it up to your receiver, make sure the laptop Audio Device is set to HDMI Audio as the Default.

Third of all, computers have a mind of their own.:D

Oh, sorry, did I already say that?:D

I have a $1,200 HP blu-ray laptop that does that at times too, so I feel your pain!

Sometimes I just reinstall the operating system and it fixed it.

I have that same laptop and it does audio over HDMI. But it is darn aggravating. For some reason Windows doesn't always switch the audio. I have to manually go into the audio control panel and make the switch.

Plug the HDMI cable in and power down the laptop. Power back up and see if you have audio.

I find that once I get an HTPC setup and functioning I leave it the hell alone:D

Exactly.:D

I think laptops are actually HARDER to mess around with than desktops.

I've never had any issues with HDMI audio with my 2 desktop HTPCs, but my HP laptop is a different story - as long as I leave the HDMI cable there like FOREVER and do NOT unhook it, it's okay - it behaves like a desktop. :D

But it's a LAPTOP. You are suppose to unhook things and take it with you - like PORTABLE? But man, as soon as I unhook that HDMI cable, there is no telling.

It seems this is a major bug with Windows 7. If you use a program to strip the HDCP codes, like Sly Soft, windows 7 will not boot.

I found all this and there are a lot of other posts.

I think Windows 7 is crap for HTPC.:D

I also tried out Windows 7 and switched right back to Vista Ultimate 32 bit.:D

I have a feeling these issues will get fixed soon enough, it's a new OS and there will be updated drivers or software patches out before long that will fix all these problems.

You need to wait for the real version of Windows 7. It's called SP1.

But how many months will we have to wait for SP1?

Why am I not surprised?

It seems Microsoft has a lot of trouble getting a good OS going. I figured 7 was just another iteration of windows. It's kinda disappointing, but not surprising.

I'm not downplaying how difficult building an OS is, but still it's just sad to see them continue to fail at their goal.
