Win7 for $29.99 - Must be university student

I just came across this. Be all looks it's a real steal of a deal. The only catch is that you must be a university student.

The offer can be found at www.win741.com.

From what I can gather you have a choice of either the Home Premium or Professional Edition. I'd go for the Professional since it has an "XP Mode". The Home Premium does not.

There have been issues reported with 32 bit systems and the download. CNN just posted a blog/article about the workaround. It shows you how to build and save an ISO of the download. The title of the article isn't too inviting, but the information is important.

I did this and it worked just fine, I'm still waiting on my physical disc, but the download worked great. You can also get this same deal by calling MS directly.

I need to see if I can get this through the military if my wife's college email isn't still active.

You can also get it by signing up for a free australia.edu account.

You don't have to be a university student. Community and four-year only college faculty and students (not sure about staff) are also eligible! :p

For anyone that doesn't know, discount Windows and Office versions have been available since Windows 95 (if not earlier).

Thanks for the reminder, Pat.

Basically if you have a valid .edu email address, you are able to take advantage of this offer.

What is frustrating about this is:

You spend hundreds of dollars buying a computer with Vista in it and it doesn't work like intended in the first place.

Now, Micro$oft comes up with Windows 7 which is supposedly better for your system.

Micro$oft comes out and says that they finally listened to the users (They couldn't figure out what users want for 30 years of their development), and came up with a better product. That intrinsically means that they messed up Vista.

That means, either windows 7 should be free at least to vista users OR for a nominal fee of around 30 bucks just like Apple.

Not 200 dollars (for ultimate). I know, this post should be in steam vent section.

Has anyone gotten the option to upgrade to Pro? I only see the home version.

EDIT: Never mind, I found it. Hard to see in that BOLD line!

Any troubles with the download or install?

For everyone - is this a true upgrade or is it a clean install, meaning everything is wiped that was old?

(Obviously, I have not taken advantage of this yet.)

You can do a clean install, but you have to make the files into a bootable .iso but that is easy to do.

Developing an OS has to be one of the most challenging things in software. The cost of developing software is very high. Remember even the entry level SE costs 50k. Remember Microsoft alternates good products with bad ones. 95 OSR, 98 SE, XP were all pretty decent the tweeners sucked to high heaven.

So if I install this will it delete everything off of my computer such as music, pictures and other files?

You can use the windows tool and an external hard drive to transfer your files.

OK, so its expensive to develop and OS. That makes it an expensive MS screwup, but still an MS screwup. I'm not paying $200 for an upgrade for something that MS screwed up.

FWIW, I spent 15 years on the sales and marketing side of the software industry and am well aware of the cost structure. Compared to a manufacturer of physical goods, the costs of goods, if you capitalize the development cost, is very small. If you have the sales base of MS, its a cash cow.

MS would still be making a big pile of money at $99 and a pile of money at $50.

Taking it one step further, the Vista to Win7 upgrade is largely cosmetic and was done as a strategic move to distance MS from the mistake of releasing Vista before it was ready. The majority of development cost was actually for Vista, which is a sunk cost.

The good news in all this is that, unless you really need the new media center for its expanded codec support, its really the same OS.
