Whatever sounds best to you. Me, personally, I like plain vanilla (stereo)

Does your receiver have Neural Digital Music like the 1007 does?

Neural Digital Music is a new surround mode specifically designed to enhance the playback of compressed digital music content. It provides listeners with an expanded sound stage and clean surround experience, even with compressed audio sources such as MP3s and Internet streams.

Not the answer you want, but mp3s are good for portable mp3 players at best. Playing mp3s through an even half-decent setup is asking for disappointment unless you don't care much about fidelity.

That is assuming he didn't rip them at a high bitrate and he's listening to a very well done classical recording.

Properly done ABX testing shows no audible difference can be discerned between most high bitrate mp3 tracks and cds(see hydrogen audio for more information). I've heard there are only a handful of recordings that actually have a supposed difference, but they are are usually pretty obscure.

For your standard 90s and 00s rock mp3s do just fine. Just use the highest bitrate possible. ;)

Try them all and make note of the ones that sound best. Using the Cable/Sat input for the MP3 player won't hurt anything, so you can try the ones that are different. If you hear something you don't like, find out if ripping those songs at a higher bit rate helps. If possible, use .wav or FLAC (PC) or AAC (Apple). These are all lossless and will cost the least in terms of sound quality.

Once you find the perfect one, try the next MP3. Unless you are very compressed, you'll likely find the mastering differences more signifigant than the compression effects.

Ultimately it's the quality of the mastering and song itself that makes or breaks it.
