Installing an electrical box mid wall for video, ethernet and power for wall mount tv

i consider myself a DIYer when it comes to projects around the house.

i am getting ready to mount a 50" to the wall and would like all the cable hidden...

luckily, it is going to be on the same wall (right above too) were the electrical and tv coax jack is, AND its in an upstairs room (i am hopping everything is already ran from the attic down) so i simply want to install a box with enough size to provide a power outlet, and space for ethernet wiring and DVI cable.

is this something a DIYer should attempt? i am very comfortable around electricity, so that isnt an issue... i am thinking about just unwiring the currant receptacle and using a block off plate and simply moving the wiring up the wall to a new box.

my wife want me to just "poke" a hole in the wall... but id still have the power cord for the tv to deal with...

If that 110 feed is coming from the attic and that rec. is the end of the run , sure you can just pull that one up to the new location if not you would just add one more run off of that existing rec. and fish the 110 up to the mid point, I would not cut into the circuit in the attic, as this would just create another juction box on that circuit which is allowed if it is an accessible box with a cover, although that too can be done if easier for you. I would separate the communication/data cables from the 110 volt as there could be interference/noise if you put them together so you'll probably need two boxes behind the panel.

I believe that would suffice as that is exactly how mine are installed and I have never experienced any noise.

Best if you don't listen to your wife on this idea of hers

As was suggested but I bet your best bet is to get the power from the receptacle that is down below. power cables are stapled 6" from a box and about every 42" or there abouts.

Retro/remodel boxes are not hard to install, just don't make the hole too big.

I'd suggest to turn off the breaker for that power outlet, pull the receptacle out and may need to break one of the cable retainers in it to fish the new power line into it.

By the way, my whole house was a DIY project.

If your code allows is, use one of these:

If not, like Chicago where they require metal boxes and conduit or BX, you can use a dual gang box with a divider.

after thinking about it, i think i might get a hold of an electrical... i forgot but i also need a receptacle in the closet to power the dish box and bluray.... and maybe get him to wire some ceiling fan boxes while hes here
