Hi Everyone! I am a newbie to this site and I had no idea that there were such nice websites dedicated to the audio lover. Very cool Website here! The smilies really crack me up, lol! Anyways, I just picked up a Pioneer SX-1280 with all documentation and it was the original owner. He didn't smoke, and had no pets, but he did have kids. He told me he kept it in a closed case and rarely used it & the kids never touched it. By the looks of it, it sure does seem so. It's gotta be the nicest 30 year old Silver beauty I have ever seen. I found a pair of newer JBL E-80 Northridge Towers to hook up to it. The E-80's got really good reviews and I thought I'd give them a shot. They seem to be hard to find now since they have been discontinued by JBL. Why do they make something great, then stop?? I cannot post attachments I guess since I am pretty new here, or am I doing something wrong with my profile settings? I cannot add an avatar either. When I get everything hooked up, I will report back with a review.

Welcome to the forum, Chuck, and congrats on the score!

You can add attachments and an avatar after your fifth (or maybe tenth) post...I forget exactly. It doesn't take long to get there, though. I look forward to seeing your new gear!

Yeah buddy! As far as looks go, the mid-to-late 70s were the "golden age" of hi-fi. Simply beautiful equipment from Pioneer, Yamaha, Technics, Marantz (my personal fav) and others.

I have a Pioneer SX-1010 paper weight and a Pioneer SX-650 that rocks the joint. :D (Bill & Ted guitar solo.)
I think I'll swing by the Salvation Army tomorrow. ;)

Just curious, how much did this receiver set you back. If you don't wish to answer I will understand.

Hi Seth, no I don't mind at all. It cost me all but a mere $450 and the JBL's were $200. I figured that to be decent, given how nice it is. I did a search and found out the 1280 is the little brother of the monsterous SX-1980. Not a bad price I don't think. So I immediately began researching the SX-1980 and holy crapola! You guys see the prices of some of those going for on ebay?? IT seems during my search I found ALOT more reference to the 1980 than I did for the 1280. Is the 1280 more rare?

Well, whats up with the 100KB filesize limit for pictures?? My camera will not go below 149 KB :(

So I guess everybody won't get a peek at my old junker

The SX-1980 is more rare, it's so often discussed because it's still an amazing feat.

Not acceptable, we have to see it. :D If you have Microsoft Office Picture Manager you can re-size it. If not e-mail it to me and I can re-size it for you.

Sign up for something like photobucket and link an image instead. Much simpler.

It appears the cover is removed on that in the picture, care to share what's inside?

That's a beautiful older receiver, with a high end face and with all the internal goodies (toroidal & 4 big caps). Even the tuner section seems on par.

I'll bet it sounds good too. Thanks for sharing with us these pictures.

* Do you think the price was right for you?

Cheers,
Bob

Did you happen to catch the microfarad ratings on those caps?

The SX-1280 has 4 caps at 15,000 uF per cap.

So, 4 caps at 15,000 uF each, equal a grand total of 60,000 uF capacitance.

The Pioneer SX-1280 weights 63.25 lbs.

* In comparison the SX-1980 weights 78 lbs, and has 4 caps at 22,000 uF per cap (total of 88,000 uF total capacitance).

** May I remind you that these caps from the 1978-79 era were not as tough as the newer caps, and consequently needed to be replaced after about 10 years (due to flux leakage).

Hope this will satisfy your curiosity. :)
