Stumbled on these and was wondering if anybody knows anything about them. My older brother had a pair of these when I was little and I remember hardly anything about them. I certainly don't remember hearing them or listening to them when I was over to his house when I had to be no older than 10. My brother rarely, if ever, even turned them on. He also had a Marantz 2325 Receiver with a walnut case. They are Marantz HD77's. I do know they are really pretty to look at and I love the styling of the sculpted foam grills.

That era of Japanese speakers were a total mess, and those were no exception.

Please elaborate. I've found that these are designed and built in the USA, with quite good cabinet construction, intertwined solid copper internal wiring, beefy drivers, and a very good crossover network. Pretty much everything that a good speaker is made of. The few reviews that I have found of these, they say they are excellent performers and have a very detailed output with clarity that does not cry foul with harshness, as do most of the Japanese "kabuki" speakers from this era do.

The problem is too many drivers and crossover points, which was a prevalent marketing ploy at that time. The lay out of the drivers is a set up for the worst type of lobing errors. You just don't design a speaker that way, with a square panel with drivers peppered all over the front. That is just not a plan or layout for a decent speaker.

I'd rather my doctor give it to me straight than beat around the bush. My mother prefers the opposite and is a hypochondriac.

I prefer my politicians to tell me lies and give me false hope based on empty promises and great teleprompter speeches.:D

Now onto the speakers. I personally think it doesn't matter what anyone but you thinks about how they sound. They aren't Hi-Fidelity and certainly won't meet a modern speaker designer's works of art, but ultimately if you like the way they sound that's all that matters. This isn't life and death and these speakers are still better the Bose. :)

lsiberian, I appreciate what you are trying to say, thanks. Please elaborate as to what you think High Fidelity is. I consider anything that is cost-wise above a certain amount and has the delicate balance of providing clear, detailed, flat response, without shrill, crying or coloration, is indeed high fidelity. These HD77's are just that, and are considered by many(from what I have found out) to definitely be high fidelity.
