found a JBL Sub150 without a driver... keep and repair, or trash?

i found a JBL sub150 while working the other day. someone had removed the woofer out of it, but thanks to places like parts express i know cheap decent drivers are available.

is this sub worth putting $40 into for a new woofer? i figure it might be a good candidate for a garage sub or something...

It sells for $369 and the power is rated at 500W, although it looks like a weak test method. Even if it's 250W, that Dayton won't last long if you crank it too loud. $40 isn't going to get you what you want or need for that box and the driver determines what size and type of box is needed. Best bet is to find out which JBL driver came with it and find the parameters so you can find something that will work in that box. The wrong one will not only sound bad but in some cases, it won't handle much power.

Regardless, taking an existing box and slapping a woofer into it rarely works well. As I posted, contact JBL and get the model number for the woofer, find the parameters and match them to another driver if you want it to sound decent.

Go with highfigh on this one. Replacing this driver with just anything will not work. I would get the same replacement driver if possible. I wanted to replace my $200.-- driver with the Aurasound NS 12 for $550.-- and it did not work at all. Nothing but distortion.

well i was hoping to make a sub for the garage, or maybe bedroom... something to just add a little umph to a 2ch set up.... i guess i was looking for quantity more than quality...

i think ill just scavange the plant amp out of it and trash the box...

What I was trying to say is, if you don't use the exact same driver that goes in that sub it's not going to work. You can put a $500.-- driver in there and it will sound like crap.

Wise thought. Your previous premise was a disaster waiting to happen.

If you are good with wood there are numerous drivers that are suitable for a sub build.

How ironic. I have the exact same sub except the amp is blown it in and I have been wondering as to whether it is worth putting in the money to get it fixed or just buy a new sub.

Before jumping into the water blind, is the OP sure the amp even works?

That seems to be a more common problem with powered subs than drivers dying.

Testing the amp would be a good first step. Then contact JBL and see if they can sell you the replacement driver that is designed for that sub. It may not cost that much. Worth a try at least.

I actually had very good luck making a frankenstein sub. When I upgraded my SVS ISD dual 12" drivers for the NSD, I thought what to do with the old drivers and then it hit me, my piece of crap DCM sub used in my bedroom had dual 12's and only a 150 watt amp, but I switched out the drivers and tossed out the very lightweight DCM drivers and put in my ISD drivers and turned it on. Not only was the bass very very good but for small bedroom, 150 watts was more than enough, in fact I have the gain at only 6 out of 10 and it fills my room with deep clean bass.

The ISD drivers barely fit inside the DCM sub in fact if the SVS drivers were 1mm thicker, they never would have fit, but as it stands they just fit and the screw holes matched my DCM drivers perfectly. So instead of ISD drivers collecting dust, they are working fine in a modified DCM sub (although the urge to use the two ISD drivers in an IB sub system is very tempting)
