No sound help: Philips LCD TV with HD player via HDMI

hi there all,

I have this issue with my 42" philips lcd tv.
While connected using standard RCA AV cables from the TV to the (DVD/HD) players (in av mode), I have sound coming from my amp that is connected to my tv.

However, with HDMI, the picture remains but sound is gone (HDMI mode). I have checked all HD functionalities on both TV and player - turned ON.

GOing to another set with Sharp 32" HD lcd tv, similar setup, I have no issue with the sound output.

Philips engineer came to my house and checked, and offer me this answer, seems like philips do not contain the necessary settings. I uhuh! What setting is missing and sharp has and philips don't.

There is a standard to follow, isn't it?

Welcome to the forum!

To help you, I'll need a bit more information. What is the model number of your Philips TV? Thanks.

hi its 42PFL7409/98.
thanks
I downloaded the manual and it is totally dumb and useless.

However I think you are trying to take back audio and video from the TV via HDMI. This is illegal under the HDCP codes, as a TV is and end device.

So your sharp TV I think is the rogue.

You need to make connections to a receiver for you peripherals, and then one connection to your TV form the receiver via HDMI. That is how HDMI is supposed to flow.

truly, I agreed the manual is useless for me.

Illegal? Don't really get what you mean here. But I guess this is not my priority :b

Your definition? RCA and HDMI cables, how do them form the picture here?

I'm a bit confused- Could you describe your connections again?

The way I read it you have your DVD player hooked up to your TV via HDMI, and then the TV hooked up to the Amp via RCA cable?

yes. that's right.
currently my players (DVD and HD players) are all hooked up via HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 to TV connectors.
While to Amp is via RCA cables

I thought you were trying to get HDMI audio from your TV!

You should be able to get an analog audio output from an HDMI connection.

You have to assign inputs to the devices, doing video and audio separately I think.

Page 21 is the only area where I believe it speaks to this issue.

Assign devices
After connecting devices, assign the device
attached to each connector. This allows you to
easily identify devices connected to your TV.
1 Press ( Home ).
2 Press OK or .
3 Press or to select a device and press
.
4 Press or to select the connector
your device is connected to and press .
5 If available, press or to select the
audio connector your device is connected
to and press .

thanks for the previous help
anyway i like to know is there any possibility that 2 different brand of LCD HD tv, both via HDMI from the DVD / HD receiver, will experience different sound output scenario?

perhaps let me define my queries:
1) sharp, tv connected via HDMI to HD receiver, Amp connected via RCA cables, picture and sound output face no issue. Amp is able to have sound output.

2) philip, tv connected via HDMI to HD receiver, Amp connected via RCA cables, picture face no issue but no sound is passed to amp.

some component missing from philips tv?

Sure, its possible that two different brands could allow different scenarios.

I'll ask the obvious question. The RCA cables from the TV to the Amp are plugged in to the Audio Out on back of the TV, right?
