RE Audio SRX15

I purchased an RE Audio srx15 (got it for $100 as opposed to $260) driver and wanted to know what would be a good enclosure for this driver. I would like to use it for HT. Winisd says I need an 8.889ft^3 ported enclosure or 4.235ft^3 sealed enclosure. Is there anyway I can get by with smaller enclosures (WAF)

This driver is best suited for vented use.

Unfortunately the best enclosure alignment I can come up with is 8.80 ft^3 tuned to 20.98hz. The unfortunate part is the size.

This uses a slot vent 2.75" H x 16" W x 25" L. Peak vent velocity is at 18hz at just 15.59m/s.

Cone excursion is also well in check until 17hz where it reaches Xmax. However with a 4th order highpass filter at 15hz it will never exceed Xmax though.

Frequency response is quite linear, +/-3db from 20hz-82.5hz anechoic with 110.6db minimum output (with rated input power of 300watts rms) and 113.6db maximum output.

This sub actually looks to have very good performance so long as it is of linear design, though the enclosure volume is on the big side.

Smaller enclosures are not the best option with this driver. For HT sealed is an OK option here though the F3 in a 4.15ft^3 enclosure is at 33hz with the F10 at 20.41hz. Depending upon your room size, you may have enough room gain to allow suitable low end response.

The smallest one could go would be 2.75ft^3 sealed. This puts the overall Qtc at .802. It bumps the F3 to 37hz and the F10 to 23hz. I would only suggest this if the room is fairly small. I did notice though that one could add 4.0db of eq at 30hz with a 'Q' of 1.5 and it would bump the f3 down to 30hz and the f10 to 21.53hz. Not bad considering the size and it does not exceed xmax at any point.

If size of the cabinet is so important, one should investigate the requirements of the driver before purchase.

You can only get by with smaller vented cabinet if you give up low end extension, or if you get a 2nd identical driver and use them in an isobaric application (which lets you 1/2 the volume needed).

Sealed is a poor choice for this driver. The only drivers that work well sealed into the 20Hz realm have huge, robust motors with extreme linear excursion capabilities and massive thermal dissipation capabilities.

Size isn't extremely important just wanted to know if I could get by with a smaller vented enclosure. The sealed enclosure is about the size I wanted but knew a ported enclosure would work better. I think I will try the sealed enclosure anyway as a 4 ft^3 box isn't to big.

If you want to go sealed you should have look into JL Audio subs.

You need to be more specific. The only JL subs suited to home sealed applications are the JL W7 units.

Amp

What do you guys think will be a good amp for this build? Dont want to spend to much as I have already purchased an intel i975 cpu for my other hobby . trying to keep it at~$100. Can go higher if needed.

This sub rocks. I put in a test tone dvd and it played down to the 25hz mark. I put the sub in a 20x18x21 sealed enclosure. 25hz isnt bad considering I paid $100 for the sub,$40 for the enclosure and reused the supposedly 1000W amp from an old acoustic audio sub. So I spent $140 on a sub that actually shakes the room. It puts my infinity ps212 to shame with output and low rumble.
