Yamaha RX-Z11 vs Onkyo TX-NR3007 or TX-NR5007

I am hoping to get some help with this from you experts! I have been considering purchasing a RX-Z11 for some time now so I can take advantage of speakers installed in my 9.x configuration. Right now I have a Yamaha RX-V2600 in a 7.1 config (2xfronts, 1xcenter, 2xsurround, 2xback surround + sub). I have been a Yamaha fan for quite a while but here comes Onkyo with a few 9.2 receivers that are quite interesting (TX-NR5007, 3007 and 1007). The TX-NR5007 looks to be a very good value at a little over than half the RX-Z11 and the TX-NR3007 is even better cost wise. I would like to hear your comments on this. Other than getting the new HD audio would I have to compromise on audio quality that I get from Yamaha? I am also hoping to read a full review on the new Onkyo line soon on the Audioholics web site. Many thanks, Dan

and if I may add, the TX-NR5007 features toroidal trans as opposed to the 3007 that does not . What benefit would there be to chosing the 5007 to the 3007? or should I just get the RX_Z!!? any help from you guys would be appreciated.
Many thanks

If you have a large room setup and your speakers require a little extra juice the 5 may be worth it over the 3, and the Z11 may just be overkill.

Thanks AVRat,
My room is 17 x 14 and I too thought the RX-Z11 would probably be overkill (needless to say my wife thinks the whole HT is overkill). My RX-V2600 pumps enough power now (130x7). I don't think I need more than that but the 3007 gives us 10w more and that is fine. What I really am looking for is to take advantage of my 2 front Height or "presence" speakers as Yamaha calls them. My only questioning is sound quality and reliability. I don't know much about Onkyo and I'm still reading a lot about them before I make my purchase. They seem like good receivers. The 5007 features a toroidal transformer. Would that be a reason for me to choose the 5007 over the 3007?
Many thanks again.

What speakers are you running? It doesn't sound like you need the benefit of the toroidal. Heck, even the 1007 seems like it would satisfy your needs. The reliability and quality of Onkyo is on par with Yamaha products. The few reviews of Dolby PLIIz and Audyssey DSX I've read have been pretty favorable, but I don't recall any comparisons to Yamaha's presence setup.

All speakers all custom made in-walls (Surrounds and back surrounds are 2 way = 1x8" woofers and 1x1" silk dome tweeter, rated at 170wrms each. Center is in-wall 2x5.25" + 1x1" silk dome tweeter), the fronts are custom made towers (1x1.5" dome tweeter, 1x3"mid, 1x8" and 1x10". Rated at 250wrms each). Presence (or front height) speakers are custom made in-wall 1x6" + 1x1" tweeter. All speakers 8ohm. Sub is a 15" Velodyne DLS-5000R. Hoping this description helps. I won't get the 1007 but you are probably right about it and from what I've read I think I will get the 3007 unless you feel I should look at a toroidal transf (5007).
Thank you very much for your help and patience.
I tried to upload a picture of my setup but can't seem to get it to work. Let me know how I can do that if possible. A picture is worth a 1000 words.....

Nah, with everything at 8 ohms the 3007 will be more than sufficient. Glad I could help. Your Welcome.

I think I am now convinced that the Onkyo 3007 will do well as my new HT receiver. Now I'm officially on shopping mode
When I do get it, configure it and test it out I will let you know how it went. The latest Transformers movie just may be the movie I use to test it out LOL.

Many many thanks again.

I suggest the Irene scene in black hawk down and U-571. Be added to the list.

Thanks Isiberian,
Black hawk down IS an excellent suggestion. Never heard of U-571 but I will give it a try as well.
Wow!!! I now have a lot to look forward too don't I?

This forum is the best. Great people and TONS to read on my favorite subject.

Be good y'all

Hi, and welcome! I just thought I would (possibly) throw a kink in your AVR selection process by adding another AVR I think you should consider, because you made that decision way too fast. ;)

The Denon AVR-4810CI 9.3 channel receiver just came out (even though it says coming soon), and it is the only AVR at the moment that is capable of using Audyssey DSX height and width channels at the same time, whereas the Onkyos can only do one or the other. It is a bit more MSRP than the Onkyos, but less than the Z11 (though a savvy shopper can get it for quite a bit less than MSRP). I have always been a fan of Audyssey MultiEQ XT (which you can't get with Yamaha) and Denon quality (which I believe to be superior to Onkyo).

I also believe that extra Audyssey DSX channels do much more than the Yamaha because they are integrated into the Audyssey MultiEQ system and are matrixed through what I have read to be a more complex algorithm than the Yamaha height channels, though I am not speaking from experience.

Oh yeah, the 4810 has WiFi and HD Radio built in if that matters to you at all. :D

Thank you strube for your welcome and suggestion. Yes you have thrown a kink in my AVR selection process. You are one MEAN dude ;)
I saw this unit just last week i think on Audioholics Featured Reviews and I did look at it closely. Yes, this Danone is capable of using Audyssey DSX height and width channels at the same time but right now I am not planning to add speakers in my HT. That is why the Onkyo with its 9.2 capabilities and the price range was a welcomed new model. Like I posted in an earlier post I put myself in shopping mode :) and found a TX-NR3007 at a pretty good price. In fact, the same dealer has a Pioneer Elite SC-09TX at a bargain price that is very hard for me to pass up on but I must :(
You know, my wife just does not understand or care about all this techno AVR stuff. However, she does LOVE watching her favourite movie releases using it but I would soon be a divorcee if I added speakers (and especially an extra sub) to our HT. I'd have to get her a Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG so I could sneak in the Elite :D
Thank you again strube and everyone who responded. I think I will stick with the Onkyo for now. It should be plenty for us for a little while.
Many many thanks guys. I'll let you all know the outcome.

I'm sure that you will love the 3007. I've had the 1007 now for two days and love it thus far. The thing has so many options its scary, I have to wait for this three day weekend to play with it full time and can't wait. So far its been great.

Have I said that I love it.

I'm happy to hear that dapack69. How have you installed it? meaning; do you have a 9.1 or 2 setup? or did you set it up as a 7.x?

Thanks again

Thanks again

I love having two subs, I thought one was good, but having two really makes a big difference.

Have you ordered yours yet?

Yes, I ordered my Onkyo last week. Now I too am thinking of perhaps a second sub. In wall would be something I would go with or a dual sub, one on top of the other with about the same footprint as the one I have now. Anyhow... I'm not there yet. My retailer should get it sometime either by the end of this week or early next week. Heck!!! I'll be traveling all of next week on business so I do hope I get it by Friday.
