From 42in to 85in - Talk about a big upgrade!

I finally did the move to a front projector.

Grabbed an Epson 6100 from HHGregg for 1,499$ yesterday. Replacing the 42in Kuro in the basement theater room.

i'm not done with the installation yet (projector is on the coffe table) but wow! What a difference it makes! I hope to get close to 100in by moving the projector back and hanging it to the ceiling.

No screen yet. The flat white wall will do for now.

Just had to share!

Congrats. So $1,500 was the max budget? While it would have costed another $800, too bad you missed the bstock rs2 sale. That would have been about 3 to 4 levels of an upgrade. Particularly since this is a basement.

I don't know if you can return the PJ, but if you can, I would take the 6500, 1080ub, Pana 3000, Pana 2000, various Mitsubishis, and others, over the 6100.

In case you are curious, here is 42" vs 85" vs 100".

Nicely done. I suggest you figure out your screen size before you buy a screen. On this regard bigger isn't always better especially if you like watching your old DVDs

Grats man, I'm hoping to build my system at christmas. I'm shooting for 82" until I can convince the wife that a 100" motorized drop down screen is totally necessary.

You have a point. I didn't intend to make him feel bad, but provided an honest question and opinion. I'll renege my previous post, and say the 6100 is a good choice, for a brand new PJ, at this budget. Do I think a lot more value could be had for a 50%? Yes, big time. But, money is money. Ok, with that opinion in mind, I did blurt that out with the fact that this is a basement, and that Kolia is coming from a Kuro, of all displays . . .

Yes, it is its most prominent strength. It's an excellent choice for a PJ in a room with greater amounts of ambient light, at this budget. Making your screen larger will reduce the foot lamberts. Since the 100" 16:9 screen is 38.4% larger than 85" of the same AR, this is the same amount of reduction you will get in foot lamberts.

You can also try a PJ position as far as possible from front wall, to further reduce the brightness.

Lastly, an ND (neutral density) filter is often used to reduce the brightness, but I think you need the threading on the PJ to implement one.

Oh yeah, I almost never find myself recommending one, but you might consider a gray screen. It'll cut the brightness down, and give you some boost in contrast. My only reservation here is if you do ever upgrade to one of the "high contrast" projectors, which usually means a sacrifice in brightness, you probably won't care for the gray screen anymore.

I'd say at 82" you will have a bit more brightness, make sure you run it in ecomode.

Do you normally watch TV with the lights off? I've thought about replacing my projection TV with a projector, but I'm just worried about brightness and day-time watching...

Let us know how it goes!

My HT room is in the basement which has only a tiny window so I have almost complete control on the amount of ambient light. It doesn't take much light to really mess up the projected image quality. Basically, one light bulb ON ruins it. You can still see the image, but it's not fun. A proper screen might help (I'll be using the bare wall for now) as would zooming out to a smaller image size. If I didn't have that room in the basement, I would have gotten a 60" Kuro plasma instead.

For "regular" TV, I use my plasma TV in the living room.

I'm still reorganizing my room to accommodate the projector in the back of the room. I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I've blown the image up to ~104in and it is sweet! Aha! Not as vivid as the Kuro flat panel of course. But still quite good. I'd need a bigger wall to make it larger...

The whole idea of getting this 6100 projector was to get a "good" 1080p projector so I can get acquainted with the technology. I expect to keep it 3-4 years and then upgrade to whatever low cost projector is available then.

So far, very happy!

115in is the largest I can go.

The image crawls on the ceiling if I go larger. And it projects behind the center speaker at this point...

you could definitely go larger. but you would have to remove that rack the center is on, then lower the screen.

If you wanted to go larger, I would suggest you move the gear rack on the side wall. One of the reasons I chose to locate the gear in the rear of the room was to maximize screen size. I have a 126" Carada Criterion screen and with the size room I have it fits perfect. Center speaker stand is Lovan M2.Pics included
