laptop to receiver

Hi again, I recently ordered speakers for my new home theatre system but thats not the case here. I was wondering what type/s of cable i would use to connect my laptop to the receiver so i can watch movies on my tv in surround sound from my laptop? Are there any other ways to obtain sound from my speakers without connecting the laptop to the receiver. I currently use a vga cable which connects my laptop to the tv but i don't think it will transfer to my receiver.

If you don't want to keep moving the laptop to a location that lets you connect it to the receiver, you could use an Apple Airport Express. That has an output jack that can be used for analog stereo audio or Tos Link, so you can connect to a digital input. If the receiver doesn't have an optical input, you can buy a converter. If you're using VGA, you may have voice/picture synch issues but many receivers have a way to adjust this.

What laptop (make and model) do you have? For example I have an HP Laptop with HDMI out on it so I am good to go for surround sound.

My room isn't very big so i think i shouldn't have much of a problem moving it and by moving it what do you mean? I have a Compaq Presario C762NR Notebook PC with Windows XP on it. About the Apple airport express I was wondering if i could get anything cheaper like cables to solve this problem and yes my receiver has 2 digital optical outputs.

Those are stereo cables (2 channels of sound). You want 5.1 (five channels of sound plus the sub .1) so you need a usb sound device that will output TOSLink.

Turtle Beach makes an adapter that will work.

You will also need a TOSLink cable.

What TV do you have? The computer would be one source of audio, the tv would be another. Do you have a cable box? are you getting TV with an over the air antenna? Are you using a satellite dish?

Most likely not:

Looking at the Intel website they don't list the VGA output standards. You could try it and most you would be out is ~ $16 (shipping and all of that). But again doubtful. I would call Compaq and ask.

Ok so i have a Toshiba 26AV502R and the specs can be found here . Other than that, the adapter and cable is what i would need for the audio right? So what would i need to watch videos from laptop to receiver onto tv? I appreciate all the help so far

hdmi cable
optical cable
and a RCA 3 Connector Audio Video Cable M-M (on its way)
to connect/ is connected to my television to the receiver.

My receiver Pioneer 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver VSX-819H-K is connected with
the television cables so far and my Polk Audio Cs1 center channel speaker

So as a recap i want to know what equipments are needed to connect my laptop to the receiver and do i need any additional cables in order to watch movies from my laptop on the television?
So far i understand the adapter and the cable for the audio but i dont know what i would need for the video output

You need the Turtle Beach USB audio peripheral that I linked. You need the TOSLink cable that I linked.

You need this VGA cable.

If you get all this you will have a 5.1 setup from your laptop to your TV.


*** You will not be able to switch your laptop video through the receiver. It isn't going to happen.
