Hello,
I am getting my own place this winter and want to have some sick parties. I already have money saved for speakers and a subwoofer and other expenses. My problem is that I don't know wether I should power my speakers/sub with a reciever or an amp. I don't really know very much about home amps, and am more familiar with recievers which make me lean that way but any ways here is the specifics. I am going to have 2 MTX 1200 TP Speakers. And the sub I'm going to use is a Velodyne Impact 10". I have a large basement these will be in but I'm lost on the best way to power them. Should I power them seprately or together? Amp or Reciever? Thank You in advance for your help. I plan on having raves and hip hop parties, if you have any suggestions i haven't purchased anything yet and have about 700-1000$ to spend. Thanks again.

it woudn't be audioholics...

...without someone plugging a Beringer or other inexpensive pro-audio amps...those A500's can be had for <$200 at your local musicians store, one should suffice for those MTX monitors to get excruciatingly loud. I would recommend more sub than what you're suggesting, at least for rave type party use in a large room, and perhaps more than one if/when you can afford it. Check out SVS for subs. Considering you may need a preamp on top of this, you're budget may already be toast.

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice so far but I decided to upgrade to the MTX TP2400's. Will this amp still run them correctly? Also I think I'm going to purchase 2 PSW10 Polk Audio subs. What would be best to power these?

Seriously, I have no life.
What's wrong with the MTX subs? They probably have something that would be a better match to the main speakers and, having used their subs in literally hundreds of car audio systems, they will slam and take the power.

The A500 should power those very well, and more powerful pro-audio amps are not much more expensive if you need more juice. Those MTX monitors are probably 100db/watt/m sensitivity, so 180 watts should make you very happy.

I see trouble trying to match those Polk subs with these MTX monitors. Just using the A500 you'll be able to reach excruciatingly loud sound, as in 110-115 db spl, and perhaps even louder than that. Those polk subs won't keep up, unless you're keeping you spl's down to more realistic levels ('rave party' makes me think not). I would rather have one SVS sub which actually can kick it out at 110+ db spl than some pos polks that will struggle trying to go over 100 db.

If you are forced to go with the more budget conscious subs, you can place them in corners to provide much more room gain, but prepare for 'the boom' (as in excited room modes galore and peaky, uneven response).

diy subs

Not to be a fanboy or anything, but Decware has some DIY sub kits which represent high performance at blue-collar prices. If you're crafty this may be the best bang/buck route to take. The Decware subs are more akin to those used in live reinforcement rather than HT, high efficiency designs.

I would check out DIY subs if you want something that will keep up with your mains and not break the bank. I'm not a sub-head, so I'm not sure of other options, but I'm sure they exist. Any of our subwoofer on the cheap experts care to chime in?

Also, used market may have offerings of better value.

Also I think I'm going to purchase 2 PSW10 Polk Audio subs.
Inadequate for your stated purpose. You will be much better off to DIY your own sub box, buy some drivers and a dedicated sub amp.

A quick web search to look up the speakers in question and those subs are going to be a waste of money for what you want with the speakers you are looking at. The 1200's go to 39Hz and 2400's to 40Hz, the subs only go to 35Hz and are not going to keep up with the volume level the MTX's speakers are capable of. If I were you I would look into the 1200's and possibly some horn loaded subs. For music you don't need to hit the low 20's and teen Hz region, the chest thumping comes from the 30's and 40's if not a little higher. A good horn sub will give you the bass you are looking for. A set of stands for the 1200's a couple of good amps (since a pro horn sub isn't going to have a built in amp like the Polk's) and a pre amp/mixer to feed the signal to the right speakers. I'm guessing you want more of a DJ setup than a Home Theater setup.

Your budget is probably going to be blown but this is how I would go. Check out JBL pro gear, might be better bang for your buck. If you want huge bass and have the money, well there's always Bag End :D

Before you spend some $$, a quick question here. What kind of a place is this? Apartment? A home in the suburbs? A school dorm?
You may not be able to have those parties to begin with. ;):D
Oh, and consider the long term survival of your hearing.

Location!

I am house-sitting for my grandparents. The basement is all open except for a wet bar in a nook. They live on a 2 acre lot but I figure if I keep it in the basement it will work out I only plan on house-sitting for one year. There is a kitchen connected to a bathroom upstairs and a sun room with a jaccuzzi. I'm gonna lock the rest of the house to make sure nothing gets broken. I plan on having mostly hip-hop parties and I don't wanna blow out the hood or brake windows just enough bass to make people wanna dance (with a little help from the keg in the corner lol). I appreciate the advice it has helped alot! Thanks to everyone. I was doing some research and most everyone agrees that 2 lesser subs are better than 1 big sub. Especially in eneven rooms i might go the DIY way since I can do that stuff ok.

Also it seems everybody is in agreement to go with an amp instead of a reciever? Will the A500 handle this? And what do you think about this sub Marathon 18 2000W Horn Loaded Sub? I can't find very much information on it. If I get a sub like this does it have a built in amp? If not what should I get? Thanks Again

Well, that is one down;):D No neighbors to pee off:D
But, you may also want to get advanced permission for parties and make sure you guys are 21+ for that alcohol. You don't want the grandparents alienated. They may have something in their will for you;):D
