Hi,

I currently have a diy sub using the kappa perfect 12vq in low q mode in a vented box. I am going to remake it using the simple vq box that is on the sticky. My question is, for my education, what do I gain going to the midq option and what would have to change to the design to keep using the low q option?

Thanks,

Flippo

This is an impossible question to answer without more information. Like the size and porting of your box.

box

My box is approx 3.3 cubic ft with a 4" by 19" round port. I want to go to a slot port and also improve on the aesthetics of sub (sub is not bad but has a few aesthetic mistakes).

The question I have is what improvements will the midq design make?

Low Vq.

Mid Vq.

You gain 2.5 Hz bass axtension with the mid Vq build.

Additionally, the lowest octave will have vastly more output ability with lower distortion using Avaserfi's MID-Q cabinet design, as your current port is far too small, thus having very high air velocity at moderate and higher power levels.

Has the Kappa Perfect 12vq been discontinued? I'm having a hard time sourcing one for a reasonable price.

The 12VQ has been discontinued for quite some time now. If you are looking for another driver that would work well in the simple mid-q design I've 'heard' the Shiva-x fits well in the box with a slight modification to the vent length.

That's all just reading and here-say however, I've never actually come across someone actually doing it and posting results, impressions, anything.

Do some searches here and at hometheatershack. It has been discussed before.

Thank you. Like the OP, I'm looking to build the sub in the sticky, however, an enclosure without a driver does me no good.

Actually, it appears that Infinity has added normal Kappa sub series that takes place of the Kappa Perfect, and now the Kappa 120.9w is apparently the same high quality product that was previously the Kappa Perfect. They updated the price as well(the Kappa now is priced at the level the Kappa Perfect was previously set at). The new sub uses a glass fiber cone, a large cast basket and motor. The new unit has a listed linear one way excursion of 17.5mm. I have not modeled the new driver to see if it works in the Avaserfi cabinet yet, as Infinity has not yet released the PDF for the product with full T&S specifications.

Do you think that this new sub will perform as well as the Kappa Perfect?

Also, could anyone explain what it means for a sub to be "linear?"

Thank you.

Since this new sub appears to take place of the previous Perfect Kappa series, and historically, all of the Kappa Perfect drivers offered unusually linear performance; based on this I would find it hard to believe that Infinity would backtrack.

Linearity in that capacity that I refer to in this thread, refers to the physical characteristics of the motor and suspension of a driver; the tendency for the motor and suspension to retain similar properties at both low and high excursion/power levels. Most drivers have dramatically different physical characteristics at low and high excursion conditions, causing a radically different sound (lower SQ and increased distortion) at moderate to high power/excursion levels. Infinity's premium subwoofer drivers have always been designed to retain as close to similar performance regardless of excursion/power input levels.

I've taken a look at the drivers parameters and it doesn't look as promising so far. It's got a 27.1 Fs and less excursion.
It is also supposed to be the replacement for the 122.8 Kappa driver.

I've yet to get full T/S parameter to model it. But I'm looking.

My suggestion is the Exodus Shiva-X it models very well in that box

Costs only 140.

The Shiva-X should have comparable performance, but with more margin for safety(harder to damage the Shiva-X) due to it's increased mechanical travel. This means you could potentially get away without the subsonic 20Hz filter when using the Shiva-X. But the filter is still recommended to have the best distortion performance.

i have seen that recommendation a lot lately...how does it compare to the Kappa? Pros/cons?
I think the Perfect may sound a little better, but that's pure speculation. The Shiva-X driver is well designed and probably sold at a much lower margin than the perfect considering the original is on closeout. For the average joe the Shiva-X in that box will smoke commercial subs of similar price. Heck even in subpar boxes people are amazed by the Shiva. I can imagine in that well designed box you would get a lot out of that driver. If you want something better you are probably looking at the JL Audio 12w7. or the TC Sounds(aka Audipulse) 12" Axis(for 12 inch subs). If the 12" Axis were still on sale it would be the best value, but it's not so it requires some serious cash to get.
