Loudspeakers+?

Ok guys, I'm looking to put together a somewhat simple setup for my college needs.

I have (2) MTX TP112 loudspeakers, which are rated at 150W RMS,
and (1) Yamaha CR-420, a hand-me-down from dad which outputs around 25wpc.

Currently they are hooked up to the xbox, tv, ipod, etc..

Main goal is to provide music for parties, but I'm wondering if a decent receiver wouldn't do the job + be able to be used in my first "home theater" setup.

Guess I just want to know my options (as knowledge here is at a minimum), and which option you'd suggest.

You never stated how much of a budget you have, this is very important. Also room size comes into effect as well.

I will be buying used and most likely waiting patiently for a deal on CL or eBay.

If I had to throw out a number I would say $250 max



Room space=

People watching TV will only be 12-15 ft away

The living room is open to the entry and flows into the dining room, into an office, into the kitchen, and out onto the deck.

Therefore, my plan is to have the house opened up for parties so the listening distance will vary from 12-100+ ft for various uses.



The previous owners left a few small speakers downstairs (unfinished, concrete, low ceilings) that I plan to hook up, too.

Ok let's simplify my questions...

With a power amp I would also need a preamp, correct?

I feel I will have a better setup by getting a stereo amp with my current budget and get some type of 5.1, 7.1 down the road when I'm looking to set that up.

Is that a sound assumption?

On your budget you can afford a pair of Behringer 2031p's. It's the best speaker in your budget range IMO.

For 250 your best bet is probably the HK AVR 247 or 254.

These come direct from Harman with full factory warranty. I bought my HK AVR 247 here and got it for around 200 bucks.

The difference between the two is the 254 has the decoders for the newest audio formats while the 247 only accepts the newest formats in PCM.

If you can swing for the 254 I'd suggest it. But if you can't the 247 is still a very nice receiver.

These receivers very good amp sections. Their main flaw is with some quirky hdmi problems. But for the price you can't beat them IMO.

Does your receiver even have preamp outputs? If not, an amp isn't going to help you because you won't be able to provide signal to it. For your budget, those are the kind of receivers you would be looking at; you can't expect a ton of power at that price point. If you want more power, go with a stereo H/K or Onkyo like you said earlier. Even new, they are at or below $250. Your speakers don't "need" 150w, that is their maximum rating.

Believe me HK underrates their amps while others overrate their amps.

This thing is as loud as an Onkyo 705.

I have plenty of volume with fairly inefficient speakers.

Most receiver ratings are fudged. HK is more honest.

and I now have it hooked up in a 5.1 setup, so looks like I have some time to research more (and save $$).


I did see an ad for a HK 745 and a few other items.

They had the bundle listed at $500, so yea I'll be contacting em....

What you need is a subwoofer and a couple of satellites or more for surround! There are receivers where you can change from 2 channels to more. My old Sony I use is like that.
