Ok, I just getting in to home theater and am trying to do my research and I read the article comparing the different versions of HDMI.

I have a PS3 that is supposed to have a HDMI ( just bought it and haven't looked hard because Christmas '09 has not come yet :D ).
I have a new HP laptop that has one ( I bought a month before I even knew what HDMI was really for ).
The TV I'm looking at buying has 2 or 3 HDMI connections.

So how is one supposed to be able to tell what version of HDMI one has on the equipment that you have ( or are planning to buy )?

HDMI standard -get 1.3

The HDMI standard was published but never fully embraced by all vendors so not all of the stated differences between 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 are true.

1.3 is what you want, because some implementations of 1.1 and 1.2 do not pass both audio and video.

Having said that the PS3 is HDMI 1.3 compatible as well as your HP laptop. Your TV should be 1.3 also. You should be fine :)

Most anything new in the last year or so is at level 1.3, you just need to careful with some older equipment that specifically states 1.1 or 1.2

Thanks.

The reason I was asking, is I ran across a comparison of several controller's - and only the more expensive one ( to me anything over $1 K is expensive ) said it was 1.3 HDMI compliant - so that got me to wondering if the other things that I had bought ( and was looking at ) was not 1.3 compliant.

That being said, I have heard that the PS3 ( I bought an older refurbished model that has backwards game compatability ), doensn't make full use of the 1.3 HDMI, is this true?

Here is an HDMI FAQ I wrote a few years ago. The PS3 is HDMI v1.3, but unless you had the Slim version (which just came out) it won't bitstream the new audio formats. Since it can decode them internally, though, that's not really a problem.
