Cool - it does have a digital audio output (I'm assuming that you meant LC-42D62U, as you said it was a 42" TV). It's an optical connection, and your receiver has one open optical input left (the other one is being used by the DVD player).

You'll need an optical cable to make that connection. I've purchased these from Monoprice.com, and they are well made and work great. You can get optical cables at a lot of places, though. I wanted to show you those from Monoprice to give you a feel for the cost. You don't need to spend $20+ for one.

Do you have a spare optical cable around? You could always use the one that's connected to the DVD player just to try out surround sound from the TV if you don't have another cable at the moment.

I'll look around and see. I might be going to Best Buy to get one depending on the price, but does the cable need to be tv-reciever or reciever-dvd?

And the other cables that I need for the dvd-reciever (a short cable, I'm guessing), what do those look like? Green, blue and red on both sides?

Sorry about my extreme noobishness, but thanks sooo much. I never realized how useless a geek squad person was until now.. :p

Those are convenient, yes, because of the color coding. You can use three separate video cables, too. For example, you could use one of these component video cables, or you could use three of these single video cables.

Okay so I'll need an optical cable to go from TV-Reciever (first I'll try it just undo the DVD one and put it in the reciever). Can I just do this all the time? For example, if I'm watching TV then turn on a DVD, can I just switch the cable or will that do some damage? Because if not, I'll need to unhook the TV off the wall, run cables under the ground, up behind the fireplace and then connect it.. quite hard :p

And then for the 360 I'll need a double sided, 3-colored cable thats short just to go to from the DVD-Reciever.

Correct?

Just to be clear, you have to connect an audio cable to the TV if you want to run audio from the TV through the receiver. You can use the cable that you have on hand (that is currently connecting the DVD player to the receiver) if you want to try it out, but you must connect it from the TV to the receiver. If you unhook the optical cable from the DVD player, then you need to connect the end that was connected to the DVD player and place it into the digital audio output on the back of the TV.

And then for the 360 I'll need a double sided, 3-colored cable thats short just to go to from the DVD-Reciever.
Again, to be clear, that cable will be connecting the video outputs on the DVD player to one set of video inputs on the receiver. It's not really for the 360 - it's for the DVD player.

Okay, not ideal, but I'll see if it can be done.

Thanks so much. I'll post back here if I've got any questions!!!!

We'll be ordering the cable for the TV-Reciever soon but the 360 is looking AMAZING compared to standard def!!

Yeah, its the HTR-5830. It not having HDMI is news to me, ha.

Well the 360 has the 3 normal, color coded cables (white, red, yellow) and then it has three extras (blue, red, yellow) and an "HDMI" switch. I plugged in the cables where the colors matched even though there were tuns of places and nothing. I'll take a picture of the back whenever my phone is charged...

Does this make sense? :p

And thanks for the welcome :)
I might be a little late coming into this thread ... but the 360 that has component cables (3 colors) has an HDTV vs Standard Def switch where the cable connects into the 360. It's not an HDMI switch. At least that's the way mine is ...

Yeah it says DTV instead of HD, my mistake.

First off, monoprice.com is AWESOME! I ordered a 50ft optical cable (found in Best Buy to be somewhere around $120) for around $12, then decided that I should get an Xbox 360 - DVI connector because sooner or later my parents were going to kick me out of that room! :p That was on Sunday, it got here Tuesday after school. Total price was ~$48 with express shipping.

Now is the tough part... the 360 looks horrible on my computer monitor (just a normal, 21" flatscreen). I'm looking now for an HD 1080p monitor at around 21"-24" but its going to be awhile :)

We're putting the optical cable in probably Sunday. This will require going into the crawl space (me, overcourse I'm smaller :( ) and removing the mantle/fireplace to make everything fit. I'll take pics :)
