Auralex Mopads

Anybody have these things?

I'm trying to find the actual height of them, as I'm thinking of getting a set for my bookshelf speakers. I don't have a lot of vertical room to play with - 2", absolute maximum. I believe they come with foam wedges to vary the angle of the speaker. I'd like to know what the height is, with the speaker sitting vertically, i.e. with the pad in a horizontal configuration. If they're too high, I may have to look into some upholstery foam and make them myself.

Thanks very much. I'm dealing with a poor speaker location (as you can see from the photo) and am trying to reduce the resonance in the cabinets. I tried the speakers on stands in front of the cabinets just yesterday. Although the resonance issue is resolved that way, it's hard to tell of there's much change in the SQ by moving the speakers away from the wall. Besides, leaving them on stands just won't fly with the boss...

There are actualy two different height wedges that you can use. If space is an issue, there are the thin "filler" wedges that fit into the mopads themselves that can be used. They give you the same 4 degrees as the primary wedges and are only about 3/4" tall.

Well, I picked up a pair this afternoon, about a five minute drive form my house, and at the lowest price I found anywhere. Who knew!? Anyway, they fit the spot perfectly. I just need to find time to do some critical comparisons between with and without. First impression is that there is a definite reduction in the resonance in the cabinets. I just need to determine how audible the change is.

Yeah, I measured 2" exactly, when using the wedges to make them horizontal.

Even on my extremely dense stands, the pads made a noticeable difference in removing the transmitted resonance to the stands. I had some rubber feet between them previously, but the MoPads made a much bigger difference. It isn't so much that the sound of the speakers changed, it is that the vibrations of other items are now gone and that is very noticeable at elevated levels since you hear the speaker with less sympathetic influences. Same with the Gramma under my sub.

I agree that the sound of the speakers isn't going to change - it's the level of vibration of the seating surface that'll change. I'm just curious about the impact on SQ as a result of the change. I think I'll remove the pads from one side and and change the speaker balance on the amp back and forth to see if there's an audible difference.

If you have A and B speaker outputs you may want to move one of the speakers to B. On most units, that will give you a quicker switchover than the balance control.
