Velodyne DLS-4000R OR SVS PB10 NSD

I am looking for a good sub woofer for both movies and music and my room size is 22 *14 and is open to dinette.

My budget is around $500 and i am in Toronto.

Now for this money i am looking at below two options:
Velodyne DLS-4000R (can get it for $560)

Second one is SVS PB10 NSD and it will cost me around $655

I've auditioned most of the subs at Future shop and decided on the pb10...

Thanks Billy, i read the review of PB10 though i am still not sure if PB10 can be as powerful as DLS4000R, i mean its SVS is 10 inch sub as compared to 12inch Velodyne. Also PB10 is around $100 more then DLS4000R.

I personally like subwoofers which can shake room and can produce lot of bass.
Bill have you heard DLS4000R at Future shop and how is it as compared to PB10 from performance (both music and movies) perspective.

The velo's IMO could be as good for music. No comparison for home theater. The pb10 is good to about 20hz and you can count on that, the velos appear to drop off in the mid to high 20's. BTW if you pick up the svs pb10 from SB you can save a few bucks on delivery. I'm in Markham about 15 mins away from SB if you'd like an audition....

My Movies/Music ratio is 70:30, so i need a subwoofer which is excellent for movies and good for music and after reading your post i guess SVS PB10 is better for movies.

If you dont mind me asking how much did PB10 cost you and from where did you buy it.

For around your budget those aren't the only two subs out there.

Try the eD A3-300 for $550 shipped.

Also the HSU VTF-2 MK 3 for $558 shipped

I bought it from SB...but I was lucky because last summer the pb10 was 499.99 cdn because of the strenght of our dollar. Unless you are handy and can DIY the pb10 is you best option.

I'm sure Sonicboom has a return policy...but I'm sure that won't be nescessary...

PS: I've looked into some of the other brands(hsu,outlaw....etc) and you're right the duty and brokerage fees really drive up the price.

Is PB10 as powerful as DLS4000R ?

I know PB10 can go as low as 20Hz but not sure if it powerful enough for my room size, what do you think?

I had the PB-10 in a 19x20 room with high vaulted ceilings and open to the kitchen. It did quite well, but was not able to move enough air to really be effective (for what I was looking for) in my giant space. It went to 18Hz and dropped off significantly at 16Hz, which is quite impressive for a 10" sub; it is an SVS after all Your room is slightly smaller and I think it would do well, though I think a PB-12 would be a better choice.

Hi John, you're so right about the pb12. I sure learned the hardway and in hindsight I should've bought the pb12 because my room is 21x15 and open to the rest of the house. People did advised me to go bigger as you can never have to much good bass, I sure wish I listened ...

The velos will have more spl simply because they're larger subs, but the extension of the pb10 will IMO give you more impact for home theather!

I would go with the PB12 here. Yes, it's more expensive but you'll be happier.

I too would reccomend the larger PB12, you won't regret it.

SVS for sure. The Velos in that class have no bottom end. Very good for music, but fall short for movies. I had the DLS5000 and I did not believe it until I saw freq response meter of the output. Below 30Hz..it fades to nothing.
It will pressurize a small to moderate room, but you will never get that torpedo in your gut.

After buying SVS PB12, i will try to compare these two subs (non-technical) and will let you know my experience.

Ok guys i have bought SVS PB12 and have hooked it up.

I must admit it is much bigger then what i was expecting, Velodyne DLS4000R is compact as compared to it.

The other differences i can see (physical appearance only)
Velodyne has glossy finish with two blue lights in front and SVS is jet black with classical look.
I think look wise i like Velodyne better and it also takes less space which is again plus.
Velodyne also comes with remote control which i like a lot, SVS has no remote and you have to control everything from the back of subwoofer.

I am going to connect SVS sub also and will play same songs and movies on both subs....I think that will ultimately decide which subwofer i am going to return.

Will keep you posted.

Ok guys i have finaly decide its time to say bye to Velodyne Sub,I am returning it tomorrow

SVS rocks both in Music and movies and it was movies where i felt that the difference is huge and SVS is much better then Velodyne.
I am no Audiophile so basically my judgement is only based on hearing pleasure.
Fortunately my parents were also visiting me, so i asked them to to listen to
same song twice and then tell me which one sounds better.
I played 6 different songs and they liked it better on SVS, specially Bhangra songs.

After that i played clips from Jurasic park, Incredibles and Lord of the rings and i was very impressed with SVS.

Velodyne was boomy and its bass was not that clear but it does shake my room.
When it comes to SVS its bass is very accurate and tight and i could listen to something extra on SVS and it also shakes my room.

I am SVS fan now and thankful to you guys for recommending this sub.

Not surprised.... The pb10 would would outperfrom the velos as well.
Good decision going with the pb12...I wish, I did.
