I'm thinking about purchasing the Playstation 3 so that i can have Blu-ray and have all of my music on the Hard drive.

My questions are as follows:

-Is the picture just as good? or is it atleast comparable?

-And more importantly, how is the sound quality? does it support all the latest sound codecs?

Yes, the picture is fantastic, just as good if not better than a lot of players on the market, and it does support all the latest sound codecs. Definitely a great value for all that it is capable of.

Plus you can easily upgrade the hard drive to something much larger.

Updates

The sound and video from the PS3 are top notch imho. If updates are released you pop in the ehternet cable and off it goes (which I've done once). My only beef is the I-net connectivity is clunky at best.

I ended up building an HTPC b/c of large storage requirements and the improved I-net (a la traditional mouse and keyboard). But it's nowhere near as cost effective if you just want a quality player. Not to mention it's a lot of hassle ...

If you are just looking for a blu ray player then get the PS3.

Yes to all of the above. The slim version can make your receiver display the HD codecs so there is nothing much to complain about this toy now.

I picked up the Slim model a few days ago, and i'm really impressed with the dvd upconversion. The blu-rays look great as expected!

Also, i had a question. My TV is a 720p/1080i Samsung. For some reason the ps3 is running 1080p 24hz whenever i load a movie, and it working. My TV even tells me it's displaying at 1920 by 1080p. I know this is not possible, so my question would be, would i get better quality by turning this setting off and forcing a 720p or 1080i? I have not had much time to mess with it. I've never had a tv do this before, my old one would just display a black screen if on a resolution it did not support.

Also, which would get me better picture quality? 1080i or 720p?

Congrats on the new toy. Go with 1080i over 720p. 1080 is the higher resolution and the PS3 can upscale any 720 content to 1080. I mean, you can try it each way but I'd go straight to 1080 for the improved resolution.

How do you know the PS3 is outputting at 1080p and not 1080i? If the PS3 is truly outputting 1080p then your TV (or some component in the middle ... an A/V receiver perhaps) is downconverting somehow to a 1080i signal. Or, the other alternative is the PS3 is sensing you have a 1080i limitation and automatically outputting at that level.

What model TV do you have?

I have a Panasonic that does the same thing. It's resolution is 720p but will accept any input including 1080p and will display whatever the input resolution is. I assume it downconverts a 1080p signal.

Why not just try both and see it for yourself? I cannot tell the difference between the two on my 32" Panasonic. If it is a LCD screen I believe it's native resolution would be 720p so regardless of what you feed in it will upconvert/upscale the signal to 720p.

So i did some experimenting with the different resolutions.

I tested the 1080i 60hz mode, and it looked good. But, when i compared it to the forced 1080p 24hz mode, The 24hz (As i assume it's down converting to 1080i, anyways) looked alot better. So, in short, i can tell a differance between 60hz and 24hz.
