In the last two weeks, I've had roughly 20 Windows (XP) updates...and naturally my IE has started to work very strangely. Has anyone else noticed it? What about Vista or other Windows users?

I wonder what's up.

I haven't noticed many Vista updates. I don't really use IE anymore, either, so I can't speak to that.

I have not noticed anything strange with updates. I only had one update on tuesday which was for my 64 bit vista system. I did have a bunch of updates a couple of weeks ago on my xp-pc at work though.

It's Microsoft, why wonder what's up? I've been getting them, too.

Did you check to see if they’re mostly security updates? MS is famous for being the target of hackers, and they might be trying to prevent that.

I don't trust Microsoft I won't install updates. They are as bad as people come for QA issues.

I've noticed an increase in updates since installing IE8 a couple a months ago.
No where near 20, but I'm running Vista.
Are you using IE7 or IE8?
I'm guessing it is as Craig said; security updates.

Certain sites, AH.com included, work better in IE8's compatability view.

Yes RJ I've noticed the same thing. Though, I only download security updates.
I go back and forth between IE8 and Firefox.

I'm running XP and don't use IE unless I absolutely have to- I have been using FireFox for probably 6 years and I have very few problems with anything. I recently set the Updates to Automatic and had been getting Restart Now and Restart Later prompts, so I changed it back to having it let me know when updates come in but it shouldn't do anything.

I doubt that I'll install IE8 and have no plans to use Vista. AFAIK, the driver issues with Vista were cured by reverting to XP in those cases and leaving the rest of the OS as normal. That just seems like they rushed it to market without knowing what would work and what wouldn't.

And they charge money for this stuff!

It's a common practice in our industry. The idea is to make the consumers do the QA.

IE7. Perhaps I should upgrade?

Or not. I can't say I see a huge improvement in IE8. There's probably more things I dislike about it than like (all minor differences)
Microsoft will tell you that it's more secure, and I'm not a MS detractor by any measure, but it depends on your faith in what they say.

MS software is insecure by it's nature. It's a result of their Software Development methodology and their Operating Systems paradigm.

If you need security a UNIX based system is the proven way to migrate. It's paradigm is far more secure and it was well engineered.

IE has way too much access to the Operating System they should be separated completely. IE should be a standalone.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of the lsiberian OS. I am sure it will be developed using the best software development 'methodology' and follow the most secure 'paradigm'.

It will be a modern OS with about 10 million lines of code and have ZERO bugs. It will support every single brand and type of current hardware and all future hardware to come with no issues whatsoever. It will run all legacy applications and all new applications at light speed with nary a hiccup. Utopia will be here at last. Can't wait!

For sure! It will only work with Audiophile like devices, but it will improve the speed of light amongst other great advances. With it will be the introduction of a teleporter and a warp drive.

Of course if their are bugs with the teleporter no one will ever find out. :D

On a serious note the paradigm windows is under and their practices are questionable at times. This is largely the result of a very undisciplined new field in engineering. I suppose eventually they will reach their goals. I hope windows 7 is a step up for sure.

Of course I never have problems with Windows so I'm not sure what everyone's problem is.

How to use Windows XP.

1.) Install XP

2.) Download and install SP2 and SP3.

3.) Turn off updates.

I have had it happen twice now that due to updates from M/S, my PC would not function. The first time I had to do a system restore, but the next time, I had a message telling me that windows had not shut down properly. Thing is I hadn't tried to shut down Vista, only go to another site. Then the PC went into a black screen and would not come out of it. I've also had a memory dump issue as the machine continued to reboot:confused: To make a longer sad story shorter. I was told by a tech that the recent updates are affecting Intel chipsets only. Maybe last year sometime, it was AMD's turn to have problems. I could go on, but enough. So far, things are back to normal. I don't know what M/S is trying to do, but it hasn't been a lot of fun for anyone. That is my little story.
