Pair of loudspeakers+ amp

Hello,

Today is pretty much the first time I've investigated audio setups, so bear with me ;)

I currently have two MTX TP112 loudspeakers without a power source.

150W RMS/300 Peak
92 dB sensitive
8 ohm impedance

As I understand, my options are to get a powerful receiver or an amplifier.

I've seen the words "power amp" thrown around and found a deal on an older power amp, the Yamaha P2250 (manual stating 170w continuous output power in stereo at 8 ohm. Does continuous power= RMS?).

But with this I would also need a pre-amp, correct?

Therefore, my questions is:

What do you recommend for this pair of speakers?

92dB @ 1W is pretty sensitive, so a lot of power shouldn't be necessary unless you want to go deaf sooner than most. 170W will be about 104dBin a room that doesn't cause strong reflections, so.....

The good thing is that if you have an amp that can put out 170W and you don't need it all, what you do use will be undistorted and you'll have a good amount of headroom. If it's only a power amp, you will need a preamp but if you look around (Craig's List and ebay), you should be able to find something nice for a good price.

That's a damn good amp if they haven't abused it.

Yamaha amps are usually very quiet. You'll still need a mixer or pre-pro of some kind. But these aren't to expensive. You could have a nice lil party setup for sure.

Well now I'm angry.

I was rushed this morning and didn't feel I had enough info to purchase the amp (on ebay).

It was from a university used during football games and they weren't 100% if it still ran but seemed optimistic about it's condition.

I could of had it for around ~$50 I bet....Now regretting my lack of action.
