j, what do you know about the PQ of Gladiator? From the bits I've read, people are quite disappointed. Of course, no matter how much DNR/EE has been applied, the increase in resolution still can't be ignored. Also, I've read once that the UK and German editions are using the same encode/transfer/source, so that option isn't available either (not that I've ever bought "foreign").

Well, that basically means for me that if I buy only one of those, it'll most definitely be Braveheart.

I haven't really heard anything about the PQ of Gladiator. I guess it depends if it is the same as current foreign releases or not. I believe it was you commented about what people were saying about The Thing on BD, but I checked it out and have to say that the PQ was still quite good even compared to the HD DVD. DNR didn't really seem to be as big of a deal as some say, or I am less picky. If you compare frame by frame I can see the difference, but when the movie is playing, it isn't as noticeable.

I just read that if you buy both of these at Best Buy together you get a $10 discount, so $18 each. Not a spectacular price, but a decent deal. We'll see on release day if anyone has it lower (Frys).

Appears to be in-store only, not available online, which means the deal won't show up until the 1st. I would presume that if you did in-store pickup you would still get this deal though.

I just got word that these discs will also include a $10 mail in rebate for current DVD owners to upgrade, so that is a REALLY good deal at about $8/each. I read that this deal will break release date and go on sale this weekend at some retailers.

I don't think I could take Mel Gibson in so much detail. On the other hand, re-creating Commodus (who was actually FAR more corrupt and perverse than in the movie), Marcus Aurelius and pagan Rome in 200 AD raises goosebumps on this latin-educated fan of the Empire. Roma Victor!

Like I said: tweakers...I checked out Gladiator last night and it looked quite good to me. While you can see what they are talking about, it didn't detract from the viewing experience for me. Braveheart is showing its age a bit; a few long shots looked quite grainy, but close up shots look excellent. Sound is very good on both of them. Will be watching both in their entirety this weekend
