Subwoofer on a Budget w/ an Unenclosed Room

What would you guys recommend for a sub in the room this size?

Shape: U shape
Length: 30' (longest section)
Width: 10' narrow w/ 25' being the widest section
Height: 8'

I am on a budget ($400) so for now, I just want something that will enhance my movie watching experience. Is it possible to just go with 1 sub or will I need 2 subs? I could just go with 1 now and add another one later.

Thoughts?

$400 pretty much limits you to a small number of choices, most of which will be pushing their limits in that much space. I had a SVS PB-10 in a large room that was open to a hallway and kitchen and it did surprisingly well in that space. PB-10. Then add a second one down the road and you are all set. That was SVS's recommendation to me, but I ended up getting a larger sub.

Next might be the Cadence CSX-15 which has more output than the PB-10: http://www.cadencehometheaterspeakers.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=17&idcategory=2

Thx Garcia for the quick reply.

Someone local is selling a used Velodyne CHT-15 for $200, would that be worthwhile for me to look into getting?

The Velo CHTs aren't the best subs. Like the Cadence, it won't go really low, but it should have plenty of output for a large space. The Cadence says 10Hz, but I don't recall it being strong below 20. It isn't the most accurate sub, but for the price it looks and performs well.

I haven't heard the UFW-10 so I can't comment on it, but I know their other products are solid.

Thx. I am eyeing a barely used PB12-Plus for around $300. Hopefully, things will work out and I get it.

I had the 8" version of the CHT (aka DLS) and have heard the 15" version. j garcia described them well. Good output but not especially low or linear. I actually gave my DLS to my parents and it works well for them in a room that's really too large for the sub. They set it up while I was out of town and had the gain at max for a week of action movie watching and it didn't explode, a feat in itself that is commendable. The SVS subs will go lower with more linearity and similar output. The Velo will work pretty good for movies but will be noticably lacking for critical music listening (based on my experience) and provide less tactile lows.

The PB12+ would kick the crap out of the velodyne, so snatch that up NOW. Especially at that rediculously low price!

Ugh...I knew it was too good of a deal. The guy actually had the SB-12 and not the PB-12. Its still in an excellent condition so I picked it up anyway along with the Pioneer Elite VSX-82TSX (which is also in good condition) for $500. I think it was still a good deal.

I started playing with it last night and so far, I like what I hear. Now, I just need to get everything setup.

The SB-12 is still from the Plus line, so it is a solid sub, but it might not fill a huge room. BOTH for $500? If so, that was a great deal, not a good one :)

My bad ... I got a GREAT deal! :D

Yea...I am gonna try it out and see how far the SB-12 will take me. Like you said, I can always add another one down the road.

Nice! If you can place the sub near field it might do the job...
