Yamaha V465 question.

My receiver, or maybe Blu-Ray player, confuses me. If I'm playing a Blu-Ray movie, and have the "bass out" on the receiver set to subwoofer, everything is perfect. If I'm playing a DVD or CD, and have the bass out set to subwoofer on the receiver, the subwoofer doesn't play anything. If I switch the "bass out" to "front" on the receiver, it still doesn't play anything. Only when I set the bass out to both does the subwoofer play anything. Why is this?

How is the player connected to the receiver? HDMI?

Hi. The 465 won't send a signal to the subwoofer if you have "Bass Out" set to "SWFR" with a two-channel source. A two-channel source requires you to set it to "Both" to get a signal sent to the subwoofer.

For a CD, that makes sense to me. For a DVD, do you have the surround mode set to stereo?

I don't think I have the surround mode set to stereo. I understand the CD part though, and can live with this.

The only other thing that came to mind when I read your first post was that the output from the player might be set to PCM instead of bitstream, but I would think that would affect blu-ray audio the same as DVD audio if you are using HDMI.

Which disc player are you using?

It's a Sony SDp-350 or something like that. Anyhow, I'm over this whole thing because I can just set the receiver to both. What I am confused about is the crossover on the receiver. It doesn't seem to do anything. Regardless of what I have the bass out set to on the receiver, my fronts play bass. No matter where I put the crossover point at, my fronts never change in sound. I don't have any other speakers besides two fronts and a sub. I have the fronts set to "large". Is all this right?

If you set them to large you are bypassing the crossover to those speakers, so no that is technically not correct.

Ok, thanks. So should I do it this way, or set them to small and the crossover to 80hz for my sub? They are Polk TSi300's by the way. Not that great so I doubt they can handle much bass properly.
