The real problem is that we elect politicians instead of leaders. Doesn't matter if it's local or national. Unfortunately, those that would have "our" best interests at heart are not the ones who get the millions in campaign fundraising. I can't say I have the solution, but a limit on campaign spending seems like a good place to start.

How about if a mandatory full-disclosure rule were enacted, where anyone who thinks they want to get into politics must register at least 5 years in advance of any candidacy, so an independent organization can do a full background check? That way, we won't have anyone hide their personal information because it may be embarrassing, damaging or criminal. Kerry didn't want his college transcripts released? Too bad- if he wants in, he discloses everything. Someone wants to claim that they were a war hero? Great- let us dig into it. Someone wants to hide their connection to subversive people and organizations? Too bad- we get it all or they don't get to run.
I have a serious problem with people building monuments to themselves. That's one of the peaks of arrogance and narcissism, IMO.
An old saying goes, "If you want to read something good about yourself, take out an ad".
