I have a SVS or SV sound sub from 2002. Its a lovely sub but of the older vintage when they made passive only.
Its a 12" cylinder, downward firing, ported unit in black about 40" tall and 16" in diameter.
model 16-46CS-PLUS. I have some very expensive mono amps that I drive it with and an extra matching amp for second sub that I always planned to buy.
now I am trying to buy a second one from SVS and they of course do not make it any longer. They also cant help me my furnishing me a special unit without the integrated amp. I don't need the amp and they said there is really no way to bypass it. I really want to stay with the same look and same set up and love to find another one but cant find one used SO.
I need to find a cylinder type sub, of comparable size and shape and sound that I can drive with the amp I already have.
Can you guys think of ANY tricky ideas on how I might accomplish this???

You will have to build one from Sonotube. If you have the specs of your current sub I can help you design one. I think those subs and HSU were build from Sonotube. That has now fallen out of fashion. Honestly you would be better off building two better subs. Can you build or contract the building?

I have seen those SVS passive subs come up for sale (on here, even) from time to time. How long have you been looking? If only for a week or so, maybe give it a bit more time if you really want one.

As for bypassing the amp, I'm confused as to why they said it couldn't be done. I just replaced my SVS amp over the weekend, and the woofer is connected to the amp with two wires. Unless I'm missing something, it sure seems like you could put replace the integrated amp with a plate containing binding posts. Pretty academic to me, though, as I don't know why you'd do it. :D A good part of the price is the amp, I think.

Subs were fairly new back then. Sub drivers have improved in leaps and bounds since then.

Your next problem is that if you are using two subs they need to be identical or close.

If you can't find that sub used, then we will have to know the specs very precisely and find a driver that with the right enclosure will match your current sub.

In terms of work and effort, it would be a lot easier to buy or build two new subs.

So if after a period of time looking on eBay and Audiogon you don't get lucky, then your options are:-

Stick with the one sub you have.

Have someone design a sub that will be a very close match, and you build it or engage someone to build it.

Buy two new subs.

Build two new subs.

I personally would advise one of the last two, if you fail to find another sub like you have, and feel you have to have two subs.

You don't have any other options that will be better than what you have now, other than the ones I have given you. You may not like it, but that's the way it is.

hum new idea

Ok guys well thanks for the help. As far as the specs go, you would think they folks at SVS would have the best handle on what the specs were and one woud also think they might have a current driver that was somewhat close to it since they built the earlier one. That is an idea I had not considered. Just buying a replacement driver for it and then as you say, building a new enclosure.
Once I had the driver and specs, you guys could no doubt give me guidance on the enclosure aspect of it right??

SVS do offer an updated driver for those passive subs. See if AVS will gibe you the Thiel/Small parameters. If not you could send the driver to me and I can measure them.

After that design is pretty straightforward.

ok so your saying contact them and ask about the driver upgrade for the passive I have and ask for those specs, cool. This is a great way to go because unless I am wrong, I can then also replace the driver in my current sub with the new upgraded one so that in the end, I would have to identical drivers. Yes I like that idea.
Ok I will inquire with them and get back to you, thanks, mike
