Pioneer EliteVSX 01TXH 7.1 or Onkyo txsr 607?

I have narrowed my choices to these 2 receivers. I can get the Pioneer used for about the same or less than a new Onkyo ts xr 607. Does anyone favor one over the other for a home theatre system? I want a reciever with some "oomph" to it but also one that has adequate hdmi input for now and the future. My room is modest, 20X14

Both are fine receivers.

Both are nice receivers, but the TX-SR607 has six (6) HDMI inputs, as opposed to the VSX-01TXH only three (3).

The 607 weights about 24 pounds, and the 01TXH weights about 29 pounds.
The 607 retails for $600, but is now $320, at Accessories 4 Less.
The 01TXH retails for $750, but sells for about $450.

* Either one I think you'll be happy. But the question; do you need more than just three (3) HDMI inputs? Maybe not now, but in the future? The 607 is more feature-proof.
** They both will have the necessary "oomph".

The Onkyo lacks something I find very important, preouts for all channels. I typically shy away from AVRs that don't have preouts, especially as often as I switch things around. I'm a bargain hunter and if I run across speakers for a great price that's too good to pass up that happen to be difficult to drive because of a wide phase angle or low efficiency I will need an amplifier to meet my demands.

Nah, I like the Pioneer Elite though. It's solid enough to run on it's own, but not equipped to handling something like electrostatic panels.

Between those two, I think that it comes down to which features you want. Like Bob said, they are both good receivers.

For my system, I'd go with Seth's suggestion. I almost bought the VSX-01 last year, but decided to wait and ended up getting the new VSX-23. I like the pre-amp outputs and 12V triggers on the VSX-01, and I've been happy with both of my Pioneers.

Here's some potential HDMI components that you might end up connecting to your receiver:

1. Blu-ray player.
2. HD DVD player, or a Combo player.
3. PS3 player.
4. XBOX 360.
5. Digital Satellite Cable box.
6. Universal DVD player.
7. DVD player.
8. DVD recorder.
9. TV Cable box & recorder.
10. Blu-ray recorder.

* Hmm... I know there's more, I just can't remember. About any two of those, already mentioned.
Plus whatever else is coming down the pipe, in the future.

** HDMI is here to stay, and it will just keep expanding.

The Oppo BDP-83 eats up at least 3 of those components.

Blu-ray recorders aren't available yet, but I'm thinking HDMI 1.4 will probably bring those about.

I seriously doubt that someone would have both cable and digital satellite services in their homes, let alone connected to the same television.

A DVD recorder wouldn't necessarily have to be connected via HDMI since you would more than likely choose to use the Oppo, PS3, or some other Blu-ray player to play it back as it would result in higher image quality.

So that theoretically lowers the list to

1. Oppo BDP-83
2. PS3
3. XBOX 3sucky
4. HD DVD player (assuming you don't just use the XBOX 3sucky add-on drive, but who wants all that extra fan noise?)
5. Possibly a Blu-ray recorder down the road

There, I've effectively lowered the list to five possible components placing it within the connectivity realm of the Onkyo. Considering your arrangement it may be as low as 3 components covering almost all bases aside from the Blu-ray recorder, placing that in the realm of the Pioneer.
