My installers are coming tomorrow to install my new system (part new, part exitsing components) in my house. :D

They just called and said they dont have the Yammy, want to switch it out for the Pioneer Elite. I am against it (since I have had a Yammy, and havent tested the Pioneer with my speaker set up) but am looking for any input anyone has on these units.

Yamaha RXV-765b vs. Pioneer Elite VSX-21THX

To be paied with:
PSB Image 4T towers
Totem Tribe Center
Totem TA in Wall rears
Totem Storm Sub
Bose 251 (outdoor, zone 2 speakers)

Panny TCP42S1 TV
PS3
IPOD
Hamony 890 Remote

Any input/compatabilty comments are greatly appreciated...

Many thanks,

The elite will do everything the yama can do and a couple of things it can't. Is it for the same price?

edit: Pioneer doesnt require optional dock for IPOD, just plug and play with OSD support.

Yeah, they will switch it out at no cost, plus I woudl get back my $150 I paid for the IPOD dock w/ the Yammy...

I read the specs on both and didnt notice anm major diff in technical capabilities, but Im not much of a teckie, so I may have missed something important...

The pioneer is a good 7#s heavier and should drive your speakers a little easier. I also perfer MCACC over YAPO at these price points. Im not sure if the yama can do sacd over hdmi, ill have to check (it will do dvd-a). Also on pass through, the elite doesnt clip the source video signal.

Go with the Pioneer. The MCACC alone is worth the switch. It is probably the next best thing to the Audyssey system, and in some ways better. YPAO is a joke compared to MCACC and Audyssey.

In fact I really think everything about the the new Yamaha's from the RX-V1065 down are a complete joke. The Pioneer, Denon, and Onkyos's offer so much more for equal or less money in some cases.

Why is YPAO a joke? The one found on teh RX-V3900 does multi seating position. Besides, whats the good of multi seating position? Each position is then average of the number of positions set and not optimized for a single seating psoition? Have you heard teh differences or just read about it? I think YPAO does a fine job.

More? In what way? Most of the new receivers in the $500 price bracket exclude pre-amp outputs but Yamaha kept theres. I don't give a rat's *** about IPOD docks becuase I don't like listening to compressed crap. My satelite bill is high enough so I'm not going to pay for yet another suscripion service for listening to Sirus radio. The only thing I don't like seeing from the new Yamaha models is that they are makign them lighter. I wonder when Audioholics is going to get off their duff and start seriously testing some of their 1st look reviews, epsically the RX-V1065. Without a real test, its just the rumour mill going amuck in here.

I have spent many hours along with other co-workers using the YPAO system and have never a achieved a good result. They also do nothing with the subwoofer. The reason for multiple listening positions is to obtain a accurate equalized curve. This technique has been used in the cinema industry and is a proven standard.

Don't get me wrong I love Yamaha and think they are one of the best consumer electronics companies on the market. But they dropped the ball on the new line of entry level receivers. IPOD docks are very handy as well and are not just compressed music players. They play what they are loaded with. Audyssey is also ahead of the curve with there Dynamic EQ function which is extremely useful when not listening at reference levels. It creates a very cohesive surround effect at lower volumes.

To each his own I guess. Yamaha is just not that impressive in the sub 1000 market to me. Above 1000 and Yamaha is still very competitive.
