Guys, I have a friend that wants to sell me his Onkyo Integra 5.5. I must say it is in pristine condition. It does have 5.1 multi-channel inputs, but no hdmi due to its age. He is asking $250. Is it worth it? If so, why? Conversely, if not why not? That is right, I need some guidance here folks. Care to offer your opinion? ;):);)

Cheers,

Phil

I'd be incllined not to get it as it is a bit dated now without the HDMI inputs. But if it has good on board bass management, it may be worth considering if you want to use the multichannel ins. But look into how flexible the on board BM is first.

Hi Phil,

Great to ask a question like this, but you don't say much about you, what you're looking for about features, power, and all that stuff!
We don't even know which components you're using in your own system!
We don't know what are your intentions for now and in the future!
What are your expectations too, about sound quality with your unknown speakers?
Is HDMI, in or out of the picture? Now? Tomorrow? Ever?

Well, I just moved into an apartment. As such, I can't have very much because of my lease. The walls here are kind of thin. However, I do have a 37" Vizio but the speakers are not the greatest. My goal really is to improve my the sound in my Vizio and I would be happy. I got rid of all of my gear and just bought an Insiginia BR player. It would be nice to have better sound that what my Vizio puts out. I probably could get away with some LFE as long as it was not a lot. Otherwise, I would get told to move. Have any ideas? I been looking at some of the htib/sound bar options out there. I just don't want to spend a fortune improving my tv sound. Those are my goals.

Marantz SR6001, a $1,200 A/V receiver for only $350.

Got you, thanks Phil.

Here: @ http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR6001/Marantz/SR6001-receiver-100w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-yheater-surround/1.html

I know, it's $350, but this receiver will give you all you want plus more into the future, a receiver that you can build around over the years, a good sound investment. You'll love it.

Thanks for the link Bob, but that is a bit more than I can afford to spend. I really need to visit the htib possibilities. Perhaps, even a sound bar solution. Of course, I can't afford to spend too much on either of these as well. Any other ideas?

Like something for $200? Pioneer receiver? Less? VSX-818V-K?

Sound bar??? Hmmm... maybe not.

Less than $200? Audiogon?

Bob, not really sure exactly what I can budget for. Just exploring any and all possibilities just like I always do before buying something. The good thing is I am in no real hurry. As such, I can take my time and research it until I am satisfied that is what I want. That way, I do my best in making a well informed decision. Lets just say I have learned a great deal from my mistakes. I certainly don't plan to spend more than $300-$400 dollars at the most. I already have an Insiginia BR player. Just need some way to improve my 37" LCD tv sound. A sound bar with wireless sub may just do the trick. There are a few other options on the table as well. Feel free to chime in. Hope that gives you a bit more to work with.

Hi Phil,

Thanks mate, I appreciate the offer. :)

Well Phil, I thought that I already gave you my very best shot with that $1,200 Marantz SR6001 receiver for only $349.99. That's 71% off from the retail price.
I don't know if I can do better than this my friend?
* And it is right in the dead middle of your $300-$400 price range (less one cent). :)

I'll check some more for you man, but I doubt that there is better for the price. Unless something pop up on E-bay for few hundred dollars ($200 or so), and that normally retails for over two grand.
Just wish me Good Luck. :)

Bob
