At my local walmart I saw a magnavox Blu-Ray player for only 100 bucks.

This may be a sign that players are going to get pretty cheap soon.

Nice find.

I've also noticed blu-ray players coming down in price. Costco has the Samsung BDP1500 for $170, and the Panasonic BD605 (which is the Costco version of the BD60) for $200. Amazon has also cut prices down on these players.

I'm still holding out for now though...

I'm pretty sure I'd pass on a magnavox blu ray player, you tend to get what you pay for with the low priced blu ray players... but if you just gotta have one, and you are on a tight budget, I guess it's still better than regular dvds.

Yeah it's gotten mixed reviews online, but the fact that one's down there at 100 is a good sign for us.

200 bucks is all it takes for a samsung now.

I can't wait to see what kind of deals the holiday season will bring for blu ray players, hopefully some great deals will be had.

I agree. Probably most people here would not buy one, but this is a great leap forward for mass adoption.

I saw a $99 player at at Best Buy yesterday. Looks like the time has come. $100 players is what Blu-ray needs for wider adoption.

I agree that you mostly get what you pay for, espcially from walmart.

I don't know if other brands do this but at Walmarts that sell firearms, many firearm manufacturers send Walmart their products that only passed 80-90% of their QC instead of 95-100%. Remington is a perfect example. Serial numbers are stamped with a "W" to indicate it is sub-par, thereby earning a much lower price tag to the bulk buyer.

But I agree it's a step in the right direction to mass market penetration, hopefully something the higher class guys will follow.

Alex: Make sure the rest of your system is capable. I've read some bad stuff that only the newest video cards will allow appropriate playback of blu-ray at the quality it's supposed to be viewed.

I have been looking at one of those drives to put into my "back-up station". I have a tower PC that I use for media backup only. The video card just died so I need to get that thing back up and running.

I just read a couple reviews on newegg.com about that magnavox player. There are a few different models and some are very heat sensitive and some don't read all formats of DVD (ie DVD-R/DVD+R etc)

Maybe someone wants to get one to test..... =)

I can't because I don't have a 1080p TV (only 1080i -- component only)

I was at a Cash America Pawn today that had that same Magnavox Blu-ray player that Wal-Mart now sells for $98, but in poo condition for $169, I laughed on the inside.

Option A.) Buy new with 90 day in store cash back warranty - 1 year manufacturer's warranty for $98 + tax

Option B.) Buy used from Cash America Pawn, 7 day cash back, 30 day in store credit for $169 + tax, also poo condition

"DUH, which way did he go George, which way did he go?"

I would have laughed on the outside.

My best guess is, they simply don't know (that's their problem). And I would rather insult my competition by not bringing it to their attention and possibly really upsetting a customer into not going back to them anymore.

I have one and so far it's great. It has average load times, and has played everything I have thrown at it without a hiccup. It upconverts SD DVDs great too.
The only thing it's missing from the new ones is the BD live.
I can't vouch for it's longevity since I have only had it for a little over a month, but so far so good.
