I got a free hand me down JBL/Bose Home Theater system with a Pioneer V919 receiver. Everything sounds decent (can't complain, it was free...) besides the tiny Bose subwoofer.

I wanted to get something decent for under 400$. Any suggestions? Ive been reading reviews but it seems like everything is above 600.00.:(

The system will be placed in my small bedroom.

How big is the bedroom?...give dimensions.

You can always buy used...check out the SELL YOUR GEAR THREADS.....they got some decent subs for a great price. You can always save up for a few months or more and get a really nice sub. I tend to think the sub is one of the most important speakers to get (I love Bass, not the ones that swim in water haha).....if you get a really nice one, then you can slowly upgrade the other speakers over time. Don't settle for something thats going to get you by.....Get something good, and build the system from the sub up.

A few very good under $400 options:

HSU STF2
http://hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html

Energy ESW-V10
http://www.wwstereo.com/#/ecommerce/store/Speakers/33/144980//

Elemental Designs A2-300 (lots of output and extension, but probably not as clean/articulate sounding as the others)

Martin Logan Dynamo (more for music...it's a very small sealed 10" sub, so not going to give you near the output of the above ported options)

If you like the JL W6 subs....then you should talk to some of the guys on here that can give you the details on building your own DIY sub using JL subs, including the powerful W7....these guys got tons of knoweledge. It will still cost you a lot of money; However, you could build it bit by bit...(you get some money, build a lil more at a time). These guys will swear to you that the DIY sub will perform as well if not better than expensive subs out there, and for a fraction of the cost.

It hasn't been mentioned, but I have a KEF PSW2500 that I've been letting collect dust. I replaced it with a smaller KEF because the 2500 was a little too much for the size room it was in.

I can recommend the KEF subs,
