I can see that the 765 has a lot more features like more HDMI ports, upscalling, weight less.

I am planning to by a 663, do you think I should switch to the newer 765?

Less weight is not a good feature. Generally that means the amp section is lacking in comparison to a receiver that's heavier.
Aside from the extra HDMI inputs I'm not sure I'm terribly impressd by the 765.
Without a doubt you will be able to pick up the 663 at a reduced price after the release of the new yamaha models.

It has the same rated power supply, but the RX-V663 should be less expensive anyway. If scaling is a function you need then go with the RX-V765 or RX-V763. Otherwise, look at competing brand receivers for the features you are looking for.

Same question

I have the same question. I ordered the 663 and the sales rep says they are out but will give me the 765 for the same price. I'm mostly interested in sound quality and ease of connectivity/setup. So far my laptop is the only HDMI that I might connect. Any reason to wait for the 663?

Thanks,
-Mike

Hi Mike, welcome home. :)

So, you're saying you can get the 765 now, for a good price, and you're asking if should wait for the 663, right?

The sound quality between these two will be less than 1% at best.
So, now, just go for the features you want, which is? ;)
* Tip: Just go to Yamaha own web site and compare these two on their feature's set.

Cheers,
Bob

I would go with the RX-V663, if for no other reason than the 765 doesn't have assignable digital audio inputs, unless you have a need for more than 2 HDMI inputs, but of course an HDMI switch is still an option. Another good receiver in that price rance is the Denon AVR-1909 or the newer AVR-1910.

The only thing that I don't LOVE about my 663 is that it shows "Straight" on the front display instead of showing "DD TrueHD" or "DTS-HDMA" when playing back the new HD formats.

My buddy has a 665 and he likes his as well......although I have heard bad things about the x65 series as far as the amplification section not being on par with the x63 series...can't comment on this too much through as my buddy has very efficient speakers from TSC and also lives in an apartment so he never cranks the stereo.

Are you bitstreaming the lossless audio to your 663 or is it PCM? Do you have the 663 set to Sur. Decode as well?
