He plans on getting a 1080p tv later.

Here it is.

For what your buddy has right now, he does not have to spend that much.
About a Marantz SR6001 $1,200 A/V Receiver for only $349.99?

-> With two (2) HDMI inputs version 1.2, he's all set to receive the new high resolution audio codecs, decoded in the Blu-ray player, and sent through Linear PCM, in the Receiver. No loss of audio resolution whatsoever. :)
And he can always add an HDMI Switcher in the future, when the need arrives. They could be had for only $40.

Or for another option, about The Onkyo TX-SR607 for $369.99?

-> It does have the new audio internal decoders, and six (6) HDMI inputs, including the one on front. :) No HDMI Switcher needed in the future with this baby.

Cheers & say Hi to your buddy from me, :)
Bob

The Marantz mentioned by Lordoftherings is a great deal:

http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR6001/Marantz/SR6001-receiver-100w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html

The two downsides to it are that it only has 2 HDMI inputs (which means he will probably need to eventually buy an HDMI switch box; this is worse than you might think, because HDMI devices can be finicky) and he needs to do the new format decoding in his BD (Blu-ray) player (which can be sent as multichannel PCM via HDMI, if his player can do that). Decoding in the player that way is fine as far as sound quality goes.

For a new model with the new formats built in, I would recommend looking into the Denon AVR-790:

If they have implemented the video chip properly, it will have stellar video upconversion. See:

I ordered the Marantz. It fit my needs better then the Onkyo. Personally, I think it has better built quality. Mine should be delivered tomorrow! :)

Right on! Very wise choice. :)

* And of course it has better build quality compared to the Onkyo, it has everything better.
It's a twice as expensive receiver than the Onkyo. It weights more, it looks the real deal, it sounds great, it has a better room EQ, it's a Marantz for God's name. :)

I'm very happy for you Soundman, and I'm glad that you can tell which one is the right one.
That tells me only one thing, you're a very smart man.

Keep in touch to let us know your impresssions. But I already know them; you'll be blown away. :D

Have a great evening,
Bob

Nobody's to blame here but myself, to not have been able to convince him otherwise. :D

* Just kidding, the AVR-1910 is a dynamite receiver, with Audyssey MultEQ (it's not XT, or is it now?), Audyssey Dynamic EQ, Audyssey Dynamic Volume, and the latest in the line of Denon receivers, a very wise choice indeed, very wise.
So just Congratulates your friend, 'cause he truly deserves it. :)
Bob said so.
