Port Stuffing? - What is best

Zeos, just set em up with a Bose system and tell em it's the best and collect your installation fee (in their case 20,000)

20,000 I wish. No I can't throw a bose at them. At this point I am building it for myself and will just leave it there when I am done. On the bright side I get to hold most of the equipment and "test" it until their cabinets are finished in a few weeks.

Stuffing socks into the ports slows the air but changes the Q. You might want to cut your losses and get one really good sub instead of two of these. Otherwise, model the cabinet/driver and find out what size port(s) will be better.

Competition based on price doesn't yield great results. If you have to work that way, it's time to learn to counter a customer's objections with facts and maybe a listening test, so you can show them what the differences would be.

Id rather not think about returning two 44lb boxes. Shipping costs would be silly. Had I seen it, I would have instead bought the 10" version that Audiosource offers. It is in the same sized enclosure and I believe the ports are the same size so it most likely would be a better sub.

What do you have to put together for $5K? TV, audio system, labor, etc???

I have put together a crazy systems for $5K. Including whole house audio packages. I usually bill at $40.00/hr. for labor to boot.

The 5K includes all the labor and buying the Mount to Hang a 52" Tv he got as a wedding gift. Not easy as its going in front of an ugly stone wall and didn't want holes drilled in. So it has to be ceiling mounted.. and THAT wasn't easy because they cut out a good section of the 2x8 floor joist above that we needed when they sank the marble for the fireplace above that. Added four in-ceiling speakers to the kitchen (B Speakers) with 40 foot run back thru ceiling joists and behind molding. two in ceiling speakers for rear channel. 2 HDMI's and center channel wires up through the wall and ceiling and down to the tv bracket. Buy and set up receiver, sub's, IR repeater, blu-ray player ,all speakers including fabricating a custom way of mounting the center channel speakers as ears on the hanging television bracket. His electrician will run the power necessary. Thats basically it.

heres a quick photoshop of the approximate size and placement of the tv and ear speakers and some poor cabinets that are completely incorrect as of late. Now the cabinets are 30"+ wide (not 20") and go from the floor to the ceiling.

So for product you were looking at a 5.1(or 5.2) system with receiver blu-ray & IR along with just 4 additional speakers?

This should be easily accomplished for 5 grand. I could probably do this type of a job at $3k and 35+ points on all the product unless they were extremely expensive speakers, no offense.

How long was it taking you to run wire?

How long was it taking you to run wire?

The house is finished so with cutting all the drywall and going through the 8-9 floor joists over the kitchen and snaking behind the 25 feet of crown molding took 3 visits (while the plumbers were there) and probably 12-15 hours. Many snags (sometimes literal) along the way.

As far as the speakers go I don't want to buy **** for this job. Real cost for the speakers all told is about $1200 including the "B" kitchen speakers and subs. Other equipment is entry level but the guy lives in too nice an area with too many rich friends not to make an effort and use it as an advertisement. Even if that means taking a hit on the labor.

If by wholesale you mean finding the cheapest places on the internet then yes. I don't have enough business yet to have any sort of buyers club account.

On a side note the guy rang me up, told me he hired the wrong painter and that everything wont be finished "until it is" and asked about a flat panel in his bathroom. So I can squeeze some more time in with that.

Oh and just for laughs I can tell you all that the pre-wiring in the house was done buy this very nice old man (electrician) that the owner has known forever who ran 1 loop of coaxial to and from each room.. Not home runs. So if anything is unplugged the rest of the loop will go dead. He also asked about running the coaxial to the back of the flat screen and I giggled and tried to explain HDMI to no avail.

If the customer doesn't care then don't pour your life into it.

If I where in your position I'd just set them up a KEF 3000 series system and be done with it for audio.

It's what I suggest for any person that wants surrround sound but values aesthetics over sound quality.

So if you are not purchasing wholesale, I take it you do not have a seller's permit/business license for your state then??

If you plan to be competitive or remotely serious about being in the industry, this is a must. Do you have liability insurance??

Retro jobs are always more difficult, therefore take more time. Work with the other contractors on the job to see what they are going to be doing/opening up in the home. It can make your life a lot easier.

I have the 5000 series and people are blown away by it. It doesn't take much make 99% of people happy.
