Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my system and want some suggestions. Here is what I have:

Yam rx-v650 AV
Def Tech c/l/r 2500
Bose satellites.

Here is what I want to do:

On my back porch I am going to add a projector TV. And also improve my inside sound experience.

I have been looking at the Emotiva xpa-5 for amplification. But also I realize I am going to have to change my receiver as well (no HDMI, etc.).

I talked with an Emotiva rep who sez the UMC-1 AV processor will be out 3Q09. But I don't know if that is the best way to make all this work. It may not be the cheapest either since they are pricing the processor at $799. I figure I may be able to get the HDMI and other goodies for less.

So, here is my question: What would be the best option for a AV rec'r/processor? How about those Bose satellites? I am certainly not opposed to taking those off my wall either.

I also realize this is a recvr forum, but if you have a thought on an outdoors 720 projector, I am all ears.

For your use I suggest a receiver. I find few folks need external amps and those that do should use pro amps anyway. Plus setting up the combo is far more complex than hooking up the Receiver.

If you want surround sound in both areas I suggest you get a pair of receivers instead of just one.

But in most cases I think a single surround sound system is adequate and a simple stereo system is good for the secondary setups.

In that case something like an Onkyo 876 would be great. It has all the features most folks would want.

For a PJ setup I always suggest the Rear Projection TV first. Due to the simplicity of buying and running one. Setting up a PJ is a PITA and unless you are a techy or paying someone I don't like the idea.
www.projectorcentral.com is the best source for PJ info i've found.
For the RPTVs you can get one at local electronics store usually.

Sound wise your best upgrade is to get some subwoofers.

What's your budget?

And yes, get rid of those Bose speakers, and replace them with Def. Tech. speakers.

And that Onkyo TX-SR876 will be a HUGE upgrade to your system, trust me, it will blow you right off, to another brand new dimension, from another galaxy.

First of all, you do not have to replace that receiver. If you get a BD (Blu-ray) player with multichannel analog outputs, you can enjoy the new formats by hooking that up to your multichannel analog inputs. You can send the video via HDMI directly to the TV. So, if you don't want to spend the money on a new receiver, you do not have to do so.

As for adding an amplifier, are you having problems achieving the volume you want without distortion? If not, then you don't need more powerful amplification.

What, exactly, do you hope to accomplish with the upgrade? If it is better sound, then better speakers (including subwoofers) are the first place to look (other than speaker placement and room acoustics). Speakers will make far more difference than any upgrade in the receiver.
