The Sky Crawlers - BD

Just got this one last night, based on reviews I've read and the fact that it's by Oshii Mamoru.

I liked this one a lot. It grabbed me from the very first scene, (a kick *** aerial dogfight). The trailer would lead you to believe that this is an action movie, but it's not. It's a very character driven drama. It gets a little slow at times, but I was never bored. The few action scenes there are, are spectacular!! Basically, it's about a world where teenagers fly planes for corporations that are at war with each other. The drama centers around kids trying to deal with the harsh realities of war. Pretty heavy stuff that is frankly hard to tackle in the confines of an animated movie, but it works pretty well.

The mix of CG and 2-D animation was very well done. PQ and especially SQ were excellent.

I highly recommend this one! Every anime or Oshii Mamoru fan should ad this one to their collection.

Nothing is too heavy to tackle in animation after Grave of the Fireflies. Jin-Roh is also quite heavy and excellent as well (and I believe it is from Oshii Mamoru as well). Too bad the BD is like $65, and even at that price I am tempted. I was expecting to Netflix this one, because I had heard mixed reviews, but based on your comments, I may pick it up.

Netflixed this one and was very disappointed. The story was obvious yet still managed to be confusing and once it does get to the point, it fizzled out IMO. There are far better anime to spend the time watching than this.

Yeah, I wish they had gotten more into the whole "cloning" thing. But overall I liked it.

I watched it on Friday via Netflix on Blu Ray, I admit, pretty much the only reason I got it was for the aerial stuff which I heard was pretty cool, and it was. It looked very good visually, when in the air, better than the people scenes. Anyway, thankfully I read some stuff about it otherwise I would of been pretty clueless about the whole thing. This was my first, and probably my last anime. I think I'm to old.

I wouldn't judge anime as a whole by this one, since there are better titles out there to go by. Give Jin-Roh a watch.
