Oppo BDP-83 as dedicated CD player.

I'd like to downsize my system & the BDP-83 looks like it might fit the bill nicely. My current CA 840C player sounds fantastic but I would give serious consideration in selling it & using the BDP-83 for all my audio/video needs. I'm going on reviews that claim that the analog stage is very good. Even if it comes close the the CA 840's performance I think I'd be tempted to make the switch. Any opinions? Thanks.

Are you planning to get the BDP-83 anyway? If so, I would think off the top of my head, that you could easily do a blind comparison. Just have two copies of the same CD (a well-recorded one!) on hand, play them both and have somebody else switch inputs between the two sources. If you can't tell the difference, which I suspect would be the case, you have your answer! If you can tell the difference, then you have a problem on your hands. Decisions, decisions...:(

You probably read Erik Tracy's comparison between the Oppo and the CA640 on CP, but if not...

...close but no cigar. He felt the CA offered finer detail vs a more laid back presentation from the Oppo. That said, Erik prefers the more forward and edgy sound of the RTiAs to LSis and runs his chain through a Yammie AVR. I haven't made any comparisons, but the Oppo running through a dedicated 2 channel pre sounds sweet (and detailed), neutral, not laidback. Also, I personally prefer 2 channel out of the multi-channel DAC, though that just maybe my gear synergy.

I find that the Oppo does sound a bit laid back in 2ch on my system as well. For m/c it sounds better than ever. It could be that the DACs for 2ch are quieter IMO, and I've found that the m/c analog is a bit more forward than the 2ch (different DACs). I do find it to be very detailed, but softer at the top. I prefer the m/c DACs as well.

That's what I found. Not lacking enough to spend several hundred & up for a dedicated CD player IMO.
I had a CA 740C which I sold, because the margin of improvement was not worth the difference, the few times I could notice any at all.
