Need some guidance

First off, I'd like to say that I've been lurking for a while now, just never had a reason to post. There is a wealth of information on here that has helped me a lot. I didn't want to thread jack the owners thread so I posted my own.

Here's my situation: I am in the process of upgrading my stereo and everything that goes with it. Ever since my dad came home with the Definitive Technologies BP7001's, CLR 2300, BPX, and BP2X hooked up to his Sunfire Ultimate receiver I've been hooked on def-tech. I am in the Navy and where I'll be living I have limited space for speakers so I can no longer use my Norman Laboratories Model Ten speakers that I refurbished, they are too big and too old. So I am looking at the BP7006 and need a suggestion on a receiver. I currently have a Technics SA-DX750, old and cheap I know, but I don't think it would be wise to use this to run the def-tech's. I would also be using their Pro Cinema 1000 center channel along with my Bose 161's for the surround speakers.

As far as features go, I don't really need 7.1 due to the lack of space. Anything else I'm open to. Also, my budget on the receiver at this time would have to be around 600, unless you think my tired Technics could hold me over for a while until I could get back pay of flight pay, then the budget could go up to about 1000.


Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hey! Welcome to the forum or I should say, posting on it .

Your timing is good. AH has just reviewed 11 receivers in the $300-800 price range. Here they are, just pick one that suites you the best or maybe, come back with specific questions about one or the other.

In the $300-400 range and in the $650-800 range.

Thanks for the help. The ones in the lower price range seem to be a bit too low on the spectrum for me. The models I would be looking at right now are in between the two price ranges of those tests and if I wait a month or so, the models would be just above the others.

Yamaha RX-V665 $499.99 1st Choice
Denon AVR790 $499.99 2nd Choice
Sony STR-DN1000 $499.99 3rd Choice

Does anyone think that my old Technics would be able to push the def-techs for a while? If it can I would do that and save up for a much nicer receiver. It doesn't do any video up conversion and the only audio processor it has is Dolby Digital. But it is a 5.1 with 500 watts and is compatible with both 6 and 8 ohm speakers according to the manual.
