Sick of people losing jobs in this economy

They are shutting down our call center and moving it to a central "super center" in KC.

About 50 of our Customer Service Reps will lose their jobs.

Makes me sick!

I guess this is part of that change you can believe in. At least they aren't going to Mumbai.

Sorry, but I didn't mean to sound callous, but I too am waiting to see some of these promised changes that create new (or at least keep existing) jobs for willing, capable workers and not simply continuing the "streamlining" of business practices that benefit the management and higher.

Without trying to underemphasize politics' role in the failure to keep such jobs, I do think many companies are using these bad times as an excuse to streamline, and fire people, without really having to. Of course not always, or even most of the time, but I have a feeling it happens a lot.

I, like most everyone here, know a lot of people who've been laid off in recent times, or having difficult times in keeping afloat.

What I'm about to say might not be very popular, but, here we go anyways...

When the times were good, we got fat. Lots of non-value added people were added to the workforce, and diminishing returns were hidden within complex accounting statements.

On one hand, I really feel for a lot of people, but on the other hand, I think a lot of people are lazy and feel entitled to their job. They get there just in time, and leave like a bell in ringing in school. They have no pride in what they do, no drive, no passion.

Not everyone, not at Dawgs office (and that makes me feel sad), but a lot of the workforce is this way. I see workers standing around all the time, on the manufacturing lines I see people strolling to the stock rooms, sitting through break time and when it ends THEN taking a piss, in resturants for every good server I have... I get one that doesn't seem to care. Every stupid holiday there isn't any traffic on the road.

I love my job, I work my heart out at it.. My company trimmed, but my job stayed because I made more money for them than I cost. If you don't do that, you don't make sense in your job. And a lot of people can be value-added, if they get off their lazy asses and aren't too good for everything.

I'm not saying life is fair, or the hardest worker always get paid the most, or keeps his/her job in tough times. But for every 10 people laid off lately, seems to me like 9 of them shoulda been. So many people are lazy paycheck gatherers, that feel like everyone DESERVES a job, a solid paycheck.

On one hand the economy does suck, but, I think our workforce does too.

I don't blame Obama, and the more I step back the less I blame Bush. I don't think some other president would have come in and solved our problems and it blows my mind that people think that a president can. The only thing I see is that no one wants to blame the American people. The real problem is we are a bunch of spoiled rich kids with a sense of entitlement.

Sorry to hear about your call center, Greg. Are any of your friends being let go?

I wish that I was a spoiled rich kid. I bet a lot of other people do, too. :)

You're entitled to your opinion, though...or are you? :D

J/King with you, Sensi. You make good points. As a member of the corporate world, I can see why people would work at a lower level - it's what some companies breed. I can work my butt off (and have), or I can do just enough to get by (and have)...and my raises aren't really affected by it. My raises are affected by the quantity and quality of my a** kissing, not by the quantity and quality of my value-added work. I'll bet that's true for a lot of folks, so I can understand some of the mentality. However, I don't feel entitled to my job, nor should my employer feel entitled to my presence. I know that they'll let me go as soon as they don't want me anymore, and I'll leave as soon as I don't want to be there anymore.

By a worldwide outlook, everyone on here is.

Hehe, I know. :) But I think most of the ***-kissing people do is because they feel that is how they get promoted. When really, if they were polite, but worked hard enough to produce value, then they could do less *** kissing. This doesn't come from the corporate mentality of get there right when it opens and don't let the door hit you in the *** at 4:59PM ... or the hour long lunch break and mid-day bullshit sessions....it comes from being an innovated employee that keeps their eye on the big picture and goals of the company.

The call center is about 50 miles from my territory and I just go there about once every two weeks so I am not really friends with any of them. I know there are some single mothers with young kids and I hate to see it happen to them.

Seriously, I have no life.
I don't blame Obama, and the more I step back the less I blame Bush. I blame the American People all the time. Government doesn't beat their wives and kids, they don't shoot people during a drug buy gone wrong or a car-jacking, they don't become addicted to various substances and become completely dependent on handouts, a life of crime, etc. They don't watch reality TV and sit on their azz all day, every day, eating all kinds of crap food, feeling sorry for themselves and wondering why their life sucks. They don't quit school at an early age because they think there's nothing for them there and then go out into the streets and make more money as a runner or lookout for a gang. They don't get pregnant at a stupidly early age and create a hell on Earth for their self and all of the other kids they have by as many guys (can't really call them the 'father', can we?). They don't get multiple girls or women pregnant and run off to be the baddest azz in town. Government doesn't drink and drug their way through college, get a job, barely go through the motions at work and then wonder why they never get anywhere. They don't dip into the company's coffers and embezzle (yes, I realize the similarity to excessive taxes), they don't create Ponzi schemes to bilk people out of literally billions of dollars and then come out and say something like "I'm surprised they stayed in for so long", like Madoff did.

However, keeping people dependent on government by giving them what you have told them that they need/will get, telling them that they'll get more later while not getting them to realize that they could get out of that situation if they would only stay in school to graduate, stop doing drugs/being drunk all the time and getting them to look forward instead of down and backward. People who are in this position have no hope for themselves and their lives but Obama only gave them hope for more handouts.

Jobs are always the last thing to recover. And although it's terrible to hear stories about people not being able to provide for their families, some good does come out of a downturn like this. People consume less crap and begin to concentrate on what's really important. In addition, many useless and outdated companies go under.

This isn't good for our area.

Loserwife has to deal with this every day.
She works in the benefits department for her company. Guess who's the first person to get the calls from the people who get laid off? And her company has been laying off well over 1,000 people recently. Many are husband and wife pairs getting laid off.

I only had to lay off two people this year. I feel for her talking to people every day that have nowhere to turn except unemployment checks.

Our county hasn't quite reached 11% unemployment, yet. But I fear it will break that before next month. And that's not even taking into account all the jobs that will be lost at the Kennedy Space Center.

Here's a link if you want to know about your state:
