Just bought a TX-SR805 on E-bay, but....

Apparently it has this problem:

"It always shows headphones symbol and won't output any sound through the speakers because as its shows the "phones are engaged" "

Does anybody know what causes this and how it could be fixed?

Sounds like the headphone connector is badly grounded causing the receiver to constantly believe there are headphones connected to it. If you don't plan on using headphones, you could try and disconnect the headphone socket from the rest of the receiver.

Agreed this was a known issue with 805's. There is a page over on the AVSForum.com Onyo 805 thread where they give a hint at how to fix that issue, but if you use the "search" function on that site, you should be able to track it down, just put headphone, Onkyo 805 and it should come up. But yeah otherwise I think you'll either have to send it to a service center, or go inside yourself and disconnect the headphone wire.

Have you tried a hard re-boot of the system to reset it to factory settings, that also might do the trick.

I haven't received it in the mail yet, but I wanted to get some ideas from the rest of you before I got it. If it's a simple fix, then I got a great deal.... it might even be under warranty still if the original owner can provide me a receipt.

Mint condition, no scratches, $440 shipped. :D

Wow! That will be so great if someone can find the link on that, and post it right here. I'm sure other people can benefit from this.

This is an amazing price! I would jump on it (the deal I mean, not the receiver). ;)

Yeah it is an amazing price, not the best I saw though. One guy had one on Craigslist for $375 (w/o shipping), and less than 24 hours after his post, it was sold.

So at any rate, I figure that even if I have to pay for the repair, it shouldn't be more than $100.

Maybe you should wait for a deal at around $350, w/o shipping. :)
And ask the seller to even throw a free CD with it.
How long do you think it will take?

I bought the receiver already. It's a done deal. I'm just waiting for it to get here. :D

Congratulations on your done deal. :)

You'll love your 805, but I didn't need to tell you that, I'm sure.

Cheers,

LOTR, I would post it, but I was banned from AVS for warning them about a douche (same one who was banned from here and over at S&V) so they rewarded me by banning me, so I can't use the search feature, otherwise I would post the link. I do know it's on the Onyo 805 thread but considering it's already on page 648, I don't have the time to view the entire thread, but for those who aren't banned (for stupid reasons) maybe they can post what page it's on.

Here's a link to the first page of the thread and OP now that you own one, I would highly suggest you read the entire thread, it is very helpful with tons of issues.

Hey Matthew, I was born in the month of April, just about one hour after Adolph Hitler's own birthday, but not the same year, of course. I'm a Bull, right on the edge of it, and I got a great memory. So I remembered that (about your experience at AVS).

Warpdrv is our man here, he's the one to ask for that link. Also, croseiv is our other man, he can get us that link too.
I already have links to the display light problem, with the perfect fix. I got most of all important pages separately from the HUGE 805 thread over there.
But I do miss that one about the headphone jack problem. I can find it, but it would take me more time than Warpdrv or croseiv. I can also get it from my library's or neighbor's computer, but I'm just too lazy nowadays. :)
And besides, I try to make Audioholics, my main place of residence.

You can always contour your way around, you must know that already. Just use another computer, or... We live in the year 2009 afterall.

Hey, great effort Matthew, for that link now.
You said only 648 pages with 30 posts per page; great, I'll get into it.

Hey Matthew, do you know how much time it would take to read this entire 805 thread?
I already figure it out; if you read it non-stop, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without thinking; it would take a few weeks and change. Well... maybe less. ;)
At least reading normally, like a book, not fast reading like I can do (I wish I can type that fast).

* By the way, you're on my best buddy's list, just so you know. :)

Bob, yeah that's a lot of reading. If memory serves me right, it's not till page 250 and up that somebody mentiones the headphone always being lit sign, but I'll be damned if I can recall what page it's on.

I don't take being banned personally. I was actually banned here once for the same damng reason and the same dang douche. I was fortunate to meet the founder of Audioholics down in Florida for Mazerstevens GTG and explained my situation and waited a year or so before posting again. I wanted to make sure that things had settled down and that our common "problem" was no longer allowed to post here, so now I post here with aplomb and enjoy the wealth of info here and the members.

It's a shame that AVS still has me on their permanant ban list although according to a buddy of mine, said "douche' " has recently been banned there also. Well one can hope.

I tend to find the forum here and at S&V filled with more helpful info and has more freindly members as compared to AVS where they go way off the deep end on pretty much anything, which really derails the useful info alot of times.

I do like their Onkyo 805 thread and their Def Tech threads but that's pretty much all I browse anymore over there.

Hey Matth,

Recheck my post, I reedited a few times already, just to make it perfect. :)

* By the way Matt, I know all the original founders from AVS, and I will eventually reinstate my user name, in a similar situation than yours. Got to let some time Rock & Roll smoothly first, or should I say Blues Up. With time, everything is possible. If you're patient, the best is still yet to come in life. :0

Headphone issue - Search & Found.

Hey Matthew, you were perfectly right; the headphone problem on the Onkyo 805 thread first appears exactly at page 250, and reappears briefly at page 251 and 253.

From what I gathered, the units made in Japan seems to be fine, and don't exhibit that problem.
But I could not find the home-made fix for it, for the units made in Malaysia, only from the very first batch. Also, it does not seem to affect many receivers, even from that batch of units made in Malaysia. I guess it was only a small random problem.

I got the beginning of that mention here, but there is nothing really important to learn from it.
It's called: "Headphone Users, Beware!!!" It is at page 250, post #7499, at the bottom of that page. Then, you got few more mentions of it at the next page (251). Then, page 252 reported nothing. And finally, on page 253, post #7563, you got another mention, called "Headphone Users, Update."

That discussion is about an entirely different headphone problem, level imbalance on the headphone output.

The problem is likely in the headphone jack. It probably has a problem with the switch in the 1/4 inch phone jack. Usually the speaker cut off is accomplished by a switch in the 1/4 inch phone jack that interrupts the audio feed getting to the power amps some how.

LOL. At this time of the night, it's quite a refreshing one. :)

That's right. But this is also quite an older story. Funny though how some people like to revisit the past. Some' to do I guess...
